Some Stuff

We've had a ton of rain here. The good news is - it isn't snow! And the grass is looking really green these days. The bad news is - it's been really dreary and depressing. And I lost phone and Internet service yesterday! Oh the horror! I won't bore you with the details of my call to AT&T, but after being on my cell phone for 42 minutes and 10 seconds, I learned that, "Yes, there's a problem with your line. It should be fixed by 9:00pm tomorrow night." Gee, thanks.

So, I'm back and writing out a quick update now since opening night is tonight and I won't be around here. Yesterday a couple photographers came by to get pictures for an article that will be in Guideposts Magazine. The art director called me the day before and explained what kind of picture she wanted. "Maybe there can be a pot boiling over on the stove and one kid could be coloring on the wall. Another kid could have a baseball bat aimed at the window and the water could be running full blast in the sink while you sit at the table typing away on your laptop oblivious to the chaos around you."

"OK, so basically you're saying you want to come out and shoot a typical afternoon in my house. No special set-up necessary."

The kids were extra insane yesterday afternoon. I don't know if it was just the cameras, the fact that they've been cooped up inside because of the rain, or what, but they were nuts. I think Clay informed everyone that he had farted like 15 times. I'm so proud. They were sitting upside down on the couches and acting like loonies. Well, except for Brooklyn. I think she's getting sick. She was tired and crabby and didn't crack a smile once.

I can't wait to see the pictures. And check this out!!!
My book is listed on Amazon now! You can't buy it yet, but how cool! It's finally starting to seem a little real now.

And thanks to Kendra, I'm going to Oprah's show on Monday with Michelle and Mimi. We were told to set our VCRs because Monday's taping will air on Monday. Look for us in the audience! :)

the eye

I'm usually pretty good at keeping things like soap, diapers, and toilet paper in stock, but we were down to our last roll of tp yesterday and what did Clay do with it? Yep, he unrolled the whole thing onto the floor. Why, you ask? Because he wanted the cardboard roll, of course. Duh.

I'm excited for you about the book coming out. I can't wait to get my HARDCOPY of it. No soft, paper cover for me. I want my humorous, crazy mom of six children, type reading strong and tuff.

Here's a link to a book that I illustrated a few years back. You can find it on Amazon, but they don't have a picture of the cover.

Love the black eye!! Just got over one of those myself. :) Glad to hear things are normal at your house. We wouldn't want the kids to change for the cameras now would we?!

Well, and because it was the last roll. If you had rolls stored up, I bet it wouldn't have happened. Dang Murphy's Law.

Have fun at Oprah! I went a couple of years ago with my best friend and we had a blast! Cutie pie Nate was there.

Clay needed the cardboard tube so he could build a crystal radio. Tell him that he needs to wind about 80 turns of 24 gauge magnet wire on the tube.

Good luck with the project!

Hey Dawn! Break a leg tonight (in the theatrical/good luck way as opposed to the physical/for-real way). Nice eye there, looks like it would have hurt when it happened.
so MacGyver wanted the roll huh? was he building something to escape out the back door (since you told him he couldn't use the window any more)?
I love reading this blog!

Hi Dawn,
I found the BEST website. It's www.gethuman.com. It tells you how to bypass autoprompt hell and get a real live person on the phone. I've used it a couple of times and love it.
Of course it doesn't really help if you don't have phone or internet, does it. Duh. I think I'll go take a nap now.

Here's a little girl scream for you because your book is listed on Amazon:

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKK!!!!

How awesome for you!

And who's eye is that?

Break a leg at the play tonight!

congratulations on your book being listed now, I'll be keeping my eye out for them to start selling so I can pick up a copy.

Good luck with opening night and I can't wait to see the photos that they too.

Oh Dawn I am so proud of you and excited about your book. Can't wait for the signing! Will you come to Joliet? If I know in advance I can ask for a weekend pass out of Stateville, J/K. It's ok, it's safe here, we have indoor plumbing and most of us have all their teeth and there is a beautiful Barnes and Noble.
I'm still majorly po-ed at LR. I have thoughts that cannot be printed here and besides, I always tell my kids, if you don't have something nice to say.....
Good luck with the play, I'd like to come, but that would be almost like stalking.

Sheesh, I hope that last comment didn't show up 3 times, I'm part retarded today :(

I feel your pain! I recently moved from Southern California to Upper Michigan (about 4 hours north of Chicago) due to my husband's military transfer. We lived in Cali for 18 months and it might have rained 4 times in that time frame. So now we're here and I have never seen so much SNOW in my life! It's finally melting but all this rain is so depressing! And I hear it's supposed to snow again tonight! When does Spring really arrive around these parts?

Congrats on the book! And good luck tonight!

Congrats on progress with the book! This week I was interviewed for a magazine article. It'll be my second time being published. How amazing is that? Anyway, sounds like what would be going on with my little morsels if a camera crew came to our house. Oldest son whacking the bed with a wrench and yelling "I'm Colonel Mustard!"..3 yr old dousing 1 yr old's head with baby powder..8 yr old running back and forth chanting "You-got-to-get-da-wee-ah-wee-ah"..6 yr old prancing around batting her eyelashes at the camera...There's no place like home!

I signed up for the automatic amazon alert thing to let me know when it's ready for order. Now, how would I go about getting that signed??? You know, since I volunteered to pull the hair of your blog hater...I just figured I could get a signature out of it - or maybe a chocolate handprint - anything will do!

Did you ever, in your wildest dreams, imagine you'd sell Pokemon cards on e-bay, and in less than a year have a book listed on Amazon.com?

Have fun at Oprah, and I'm really looking forward to your book, Dawn!

Gee, I didn't know they used pictures like that for magazines. I could have been renting my place out for photo shoots all this time.

How exciting to be on Amazon! Too bad you're now associated with diseased shrimp. That's sort of Murphy's Law, too huh?

Have fun at Oprah. I hope it isn't too sad as Mimi seems to indicate. The 3 of y'all will have a great time no matter what!

Good luck and good memory tonight!! If this is gonna be your last play for a while, enjoy it! I'm living vicariously through you. I miss that kind of stuff so badly. I don't have the guts to add it to my schedule like you've done.

Hey, great looking eye!! If you're going to get a shiner, you might as well do it right!! Tell Jackson I hope he feels OK -- this black eye will probably make him think he's pretty strong and tough!!

Good for you for ignoring LR the other day. We don't need more negative people in the world!!

Can you tape the show and put it on your blog? Or at least part of it?

Dawn,

You may not receive this before the play, but anyway, "break a leg!"

How very exciting for your book! Congrats - you did it! Can't wait to see it all come together!

Have fun on Monday! Make it a great "Girls' Day."

God Bless,

HA! I wrote not long ago about finding 5...yes 5...empty, cardboard toilet paper rolls sitting on my bathroom floor. I still have no idea what happened to the toilet paper that was on them. (and it was the thick, expensive kind, too! That outta teach me!)

OKay -so many things to say...Good luck in your play....have a great time on O...I hope it's something really good....that is a black eye to be proud of ; ) ..congrats on the book..I'm so excited for you. It's amazing how one little thing turns into such a life changing big thing all because you were just being you. Aren't you glad your kids love Pokemon cards?!?!

Anyway, I hope you have a great weekend and that poor little Brooklyn isn't getting sick, as you suspect.

Debi said...

Wow, who knows. Perhaps one day, very soon, your book will be on Oprah's Book List & you'll have to tell her how you were a member of her audience once 'back in the day'.

Poor baby's eye. However, it was perfect for the photo shoot with Guideposts, LOL.

Glad to see you're back up & running on the internet again!

love the i farted comment, for the photo shoot! that is ONE NICE SHINER! and WHOOHOO for your boook. i'm afraid it will be too much like my reality. BUT it will be nice to know other moms live the same life as me. and have the same struggles, and things to laugh at. OY VEY! on the toilet paper. i want to know how long does a costco pack of toilet paper last in your house. mine is ONE GIANT pack a month. and i just came to realize my friends family of 5 has it last 3 months. sick i tell you! SO HOW LONG IS IT? i need to know. aslo did you pick up the toilet paper to use until you got more, in a wad on the back of the tank? we have sadly. sometimes it isn't worth the run to the store. unless it's wet it works right?

I'm signed up for an alert when your book is ready for purchase!

First of all--Like one or two others, I clicked on your name at the Amazon site--How did you research that virus while doing everything else---or is THAT why you have six kids??? Research!

Second--more than once we have had a bowl or basket of tp by the toilet with the *unrolled remains* in it. UGH!!! Hey at least Clay didn't want the empty toothpaste tube!!

nutralady2001 said...

I've just signed up to the Amazon alert as well :)

Have bought a few books from there over the years. Can't wait for this one....and HARDCOVER too......

Hi there. I'm the youngest of six too, found you from Jenny Lauck's Flickr. Looks like you guys had a blast - wish I was at the wine tasting if your expression is anything to go by! :)

Will be subscribing to you, really liked what I saw here.

Congrats on the Amazon listing! I can't wait til its available for purchase. :)

I was walking through my house yesterday, trying to step over the multitude of toys and other kiddie crap without killing myself, I thought "man, I can't ever be a known author and have people over to my house for interviews like Dawn did because I'd have to take out extra insurance just for the visit." lol But then I read how they actually wanted to capture the chaos for your pictures...how funny!

Hope you are enjoying the weekend! Beth Moore is holding a conference at San Diego State University this weekend and I'm attending with some gals from my church, so I'm definitely enjoying it!

I can't wait to read your book AND watch you girls on Oprah!!! Look for you in the "audience"....I bet my knickers we'll be able to see you right on stage! (well I hope so anyways!) Have a fun trip!!!!! And please give Mimi a hug from me!

I so love your writing and can't wait for the book. I'm the eldest of six kids myself and have four of my own. I swear... if it weren't for your blog and its updates, I wouldn't be nearly as sane as I am. Your writings keep me grounded and focused on my kids rather than on the chaos. I wish I could be more like you... let things fly and enjoy the experience rather than be stressed out over the stupid things.

Thanks for keeping me focused on what's really important!

Funny about the link. Yep! I got the same thing too. LOL
Ok, so why is it that kids do that when you are down to the last item?
My son decided to make masks out of our last paper plates on pizza night! Grrrrrr Guess who washed the dishes? LOL

Hey Dawn, at least he rolled it into the floor where it is still usable! Braden usually rolls our into the toilet. Oh the joys of raising kiddos.

Hope the blackeye heals fast. Bless his heart.

Glad the photo shot went relatively good.

Dawn - it's been so long since I dropped by your blog. My hubby is getting his kidney transplant on Tuesday and it is my hope things will calm down after that.

I'm so excited for your book. I signed up on Amazon to be notified when it becomes available. I'm so proud of you! I'm looking forward to reading it.

Quick question:

By the way, in June I am launching a virtual book tour for my book, “Forged in the Refiner’s Fire.” Are you willing to be one of my stops?

First: You’ll pick a day in June to post.

Second: I’ll mail you the book.

Third: You email me some interview questions, which I answer and email back to you.

Fourth: You post the review and interview on the agreed upon day.

Are you in? Does it sound like fun? Drop me an email at ces@candacesalima.com. I'll, of course, return the favor for you.

Congratulations! On the book. Not the black eye :).

It is the most amazing feeling when you hold your book for the first time. I remember how I felt. Not quite as good as holding a baby, but close to it. You think, "wow, I actually did this! Even when the kids were writing on the walls! And getting black eyes!".

So savour it. Now. Before you need more toilet paper and the next crisis strikes!

I can completely relate to your hectic household. I decided to label our life as “beautiful chaos”. I am a single mother of four lovely children (7, 10, 13, 14 years old). One has wedged his head between the bedrails, one has lodged a Polly Pocket up her nose while the other competed by placing a bead up hers, and we have had waste product (evidence) shoved down the register vent during the potty training stage. My milestones have changed from first steps to first kiss. I’ve shed many tears during this process as I watch them grow, but I continue to smile with delight that I’m their mom. I can take the emergency trips, stress and tears because my children’s love is incredible and we work well amongst the BEAUTIFUL CHAOS. Take care, remain strong, and enjoy!!!!
