This walked out from under my couch. I think it may be alive. Beware folks. It starts off innocently enough at first - a waffle left lying on the bookshelf, fries on the floor of your car, a rotten banana peel in a sock drawer, a slice of pizza in your son's safe, a moldy sandwich in your son's bed, spoiled chocolate milk in that same son's backpack. But soon you start finding stuff under the couch, on the ceiling fan, hiding in your bed, sleeping in the washing machine, marching across the tv. In no time your house is invaded with moldy, rotten food.
Any guesses as to it is was? The first person to guess correctly will win two Anita Renfroe DVDs: It's Probably Just my Thyroid, and William Tell Momisms, compliments of Luvs. I'll announce the winner on Thursday, September 4th.

Chewed gum??
I think I'll probably be the 900th person to say strawberry :-)
My first thought... a half-eaten peach????

i'm guessing cheese. i've read 'strawberry' a zillion times. so i'm going with cheese.
yep. cheese. :)
at least you've gotten about 100 moms to clean under their couches now. :) good job!
OMG! That is really creeping me out! It looks like some thing CSI should be investigating!
I'd say a peach, or what's left of it. What ever it is I hope it doesn't start breading!!!!
At first glance I thought it was a watermelon piece but when I looked up close, it definitely looks like a strawberry. I'm only like the 50th person to think that, so, I'll just have to wait for another chance to get those DVD's. I could play these games on my blog except that I rarely know what the thing was, so we'd never know who won.
An apple? Maybe a nectarine? Or a peach? Do you really even know?
A very gross plum...fruit salad, yummy, yummy!
Yuck.....
my guess is a cherry (with the pit).
Summer cherries are SO yummy.....moldy cherries, not so much :(
-Erika J.
We have gross stuff in the break room fridge at work like that sometimes. I clean it when the yuck factors urges me to. No one else cares...
Gotta say a strawberry. I have seen many of these in real life, beware. JodyJane
My 10 yr old said it was a puppy before I told her it was something moldy.
My 4 yr old said it was a puppy that was all bleeding and moldy under someone's couch bed.
I want to guess in the hot dog range as well but since someone already said that, I'll go with a peach pit ... a little fruit still attached.
I can't wait to see what it is!
I doubt I'm the first -but no one ever accused me of not being lazy ;-) I think it was a hotdog.
Bubble Yum gum! :o) I'm guessing strawberry...
I am going to say pomegranate that was lost under somewhere
I think it's a half-eaten tootsie roll pop. That's what it looked like after my daughter hid one behind the couch to save it for later.
I'm going to guess a prune! I enjoy reading your blog!
I'm going to guess a prune!? But whatever it is, I bet it's yummy.
I am sure I am wrong... and my first guess has been taken almost 200 times... I will go with a raspberry.
One of those sour fruit strips... like Airhead Extremes or something similar.
I'll guess that it is a squished up piece of a PB and J sandwich??? Whatever it is it looks very scary!
Oh gosh Dawn, just as I was coughing up a lung with asthma I clicked and saw your post. I did a double take (and almost lost my meal) because I thought it was a dead mouse head! Please, no more moldy food!!!!
I was going to say strawberry too, but since that is such a popular answer, I am going to officially say cheese.
My guess is a strawberry.
LOVE your blog, Dawn!! :)
I think it's the heart that the woodsman cut out of a deer to fool the queen in Snow White.
Darn, I'm too late. I was going to guess a strawberry. But maybe I'll guess something weird instead and end up being right! Okay, my guess is a raddish :)
Good Lord, that thing is SCARY! Ewwwwwwwwww. Looks like the Thing That Ate Cincinnati. ::shudder::
You're very tricky, not putting anything next to it to give us reference as to size. It looks like something that could eat small animals, but I doubt anything that large would fit under the couch! LOL
I'd have to say it's a piece of ABC gum (already been chewed). Yuck.
Pomegrante
Um, Dawn, do your "guess what moldy piece of something this is" blogs usually generate the most comments?
I have to say that I'm quite impressed with the number of responses to something I have a great deal of difficulty looking at.
Dinner may not happen tonight...
Sandy in Tucson
My guess is a cherry tomato that has been nibbled on. Hope you don't find anything else like this.
Yuk!
Is it a nectarine?
Blackberry?
That has to be a nasty strawberry! Gross! Good thing it's no longer under your couch! I am motivated to inspect places like those you've mentioned here a little more closely now.
The partially decomposed, and shrunken head of a capuchin monkey?
Clay's appendix?
I can't look at it long enough to make a guess. I think I just threw up a little in my mouth...
Ewww!! I am not sure what that is bit I think I just barfed a little in my mouth. Gaggggg. I am going to say that it might have been a small woodland creature at one time with the pus and all you know.
Have a great night
I know it's been said but it looks like a strawberry to me
I just threw up a little in my mouth. I, too, think it's a strawberry.
A moldy, nasty looking strawberry. YUCK!!!
A strawberry? I have found something eerily similar that turned out to be a strawberry.
a pepper
I was going to say strawberry or chewing gum like a lot of others, but I really couldn't tell. So I enlarged the photo to figure it out.
Bad idea. Now, I still don't know AND I am grossed out in super size!
I am guessing forgotten fruit. Ewww.....how did you find it???
Sherry
It looks like the grape we found under the couch last week.
I'd say strawberry, but since 500 other people have said that already, I'll co with a wadded up strawberry flavored pop tart. Regardless, it's really gross!
I'll go with strawberry. Or chick fil A nugget. I know, random.
Finding stuff like that reminds me of my youngest daughter (22 months) who LOVES to hide her milk cups in the house. I find them days later and they look pretty much like the picture.
Gross.
it's a wombat!!
My guess is an apple, or what is left of an apple with a bite or two taken out of it.
How about a mango?
Holy shitola. I'm just sitting here shaking my head, saying NASTY!
Dawn, my friend, how do you not have a swarm of bugs!?!?
You are a way cooler mom than I. I am like the meanest mom in the world. The kids go NEAR the family room with a freaking goldfish -- and I mean ONE GOLDFISH, and I am on them -- GET THAT BACK IN THE KITCHEN RIGHT NOW!!!! DO YOU HAVE A PAPER PLATE TO PUT THAT GOLDFISH ON!?!?!? YOU CANNOT HAVE THAT GOLDFISH OUT THERE IN THE FAMILY ROOM!
Yes, I am a psycho, but I don't have moldy fruit walking out from under my couch!
Cuz yeah, that is definitely a strawberrry. Or was.
My guess is that it is a muffin,
Cheers,
Salil
Even after reading all the comments that say, "strawberry," I believe it is/was a RASPBERRY.
A half eaten moldy peach that once wasn't moldy. The half that is missing was consumed by one of your children.
Haven't got a clue what it is. I would, however, love to commend your bravery in going anywhere near it!
I'm going to guess again and say Sushi! Though I think you would have smelt it before finding it. Eww!
Kelly T. in Justin (there's a city name that easily could've been used. :D), TX
a plum. definitely a half-eaten, moldy, disgustingly fuzzy plum. i found one just like it under my couch (it was left there by our puppy who stole it from the fruit bowl.) am i right?
I don't know why, perhaps it is because it is 3:18 AM and my 5 month old thinks it is play time, but it looks like a red bell pepper to me. I don't know why any of your children would stick a bell pepper under your couch. My answer makes no sense at all to me, yet all the sense in the world. Ahhhhhh, why won't this kid sleep?
It looks like half a dead bird without wings - I hate to think it was once a food item.
I am guessing a peach - They do mold quickly unattended - under couches....
My guess is a strawberry - most people commented before me. I just hope I get it correct. Its gross - whatever it is.
I know this isn't what it is, but after reading the Pioneer Woman's blog, the first thing that came to mind was a calf nut.
but as for a real guess, I'll go along with a strawberry. It's disgusting, whatever it is.
Hi Dawn, I think it is a half of a dead rat? Or a small dog? Or a kitten? Did I win? Kristine in Michigan.
Watermelon or watermelon rind.
OK - I'm definately going with "piece of hot dog" - 'cause that's just what it looked like under my own couch :)
I've been reading your blog a long time but I've never posted a comment before. ^^
I'd say it's not a strawberry, usually those get that nasty white/green mold on them. And tomatoes and just leak juice everywhere.
Me thinks... It is a strawberry or raspberry jelly donut.
I think it's a plum with the pit in it.
I'm going to guess that it was a muffin.
-Donna W.
Tongue - because I KNOW you eat that on a regular basis!
I'm guessing a dead slug. Something about the look of little sucker feet on the right side of the image.
I'm going to guess watermelon
Okay first....
Note to self: DO NOT read Dawns Blog while eating breakfast!
((URP!))
Anyhoo... Im almost positive its a plum... Kind of looks similar to something that I found in the kiddos lunch box from LAST SCHOOL YEAR about a week ago! Super gross!!
I think it's a pomegranate. I love your post. You are a scream!!
it's either a hot dog or a strawberry
it's a strawberry! you want to know how i know? because i have found a couple EXACTLY like that in my house! i'm becoming you!
Whatever it was, I'd probably called a hazmat warning on it. *grin*
*picturing the fire dept coming into your house in their hazmat suits to safely encapsulate and remove the offending whatever-it-is*
The kids would LOVE it!
I know what that is. That's Fuzzy Wuzzy's cousin, Ralph. Who *does* have hair.
(Or is it the Peach, new-owner of Larry's hairbrush).
Yeah...it's a strawberry morphing into a hamster head.... LOVE your blog Dawn!
That picture is so gross, I can't hardly stand to look at it! As to what it is, it looks like some kind of meat, I'd guess beef. Though I don't know that beef would get that fuzzy. Ewww. I hope you used gloves when you picked it up. Yuck.
This is even more disgusting than anything my kids have left under the sofa\bed\in their backpack\pocket\shoe. I think YOU should win the award for touching the gross thing!
Ok, you might get this twice since I wrote my answer and then signed up as a blogger and came back and my message was gone, so I don't know if my first answer was sent or not.
Anyway, I'm guessing it looks like some kind of meat and that you possibly ate short ribs some time ago, it rolled off of Brooklyn's plate and someone who didn't want to pick it up and throw it into the trash kicked it under the couch. (I have lots of experience with this scenario, since we are always finding food in odd places at our house, too.)
I'm going with a short rib. Hope I win:)
I think its a half eaten Plum...but I don't have the time to read all the comments so it may have been guessed already.
Tabitha
The tongue of a rabid dog?
Actually I am going to guess watermelon.
Nasty! Is that Anita Renfrow's thyroid? It also looks like a headless dead mouse I found one time. Other than those guesses, I'd say its a peach or plum pit.
I think it's a plum.
strawberry fruit roll up
yeah...I'm going to go with the other 200 people and say strawberry, too. I'm pretty sure it is a strawberry.
But it could be the remains of the head of a mutant miniture bear cub.
Hi Dawn!
I believe the little fur ball was a cherry in its former life. Something that could definitely roll away and get lost under a couch.
Love the person who said craisen though. Those things could easily morph into a hairy salad topping!
It's a hunk of Strawberry Blackberry pie/cobbler?
I have to tell you. . . .we had a pedestal sink in our main bathroom (aka the "kids" bathroom) and we replaced it yesterday with a normal vanity cabinet and sink. Needless to say, the pedestal to the sink is hollow with a hole open near the top right under the sink. OMG! We found a grilled cheese sandwich, hamburger bun, TONS of candy wrappers and other misc. items I won't mention ;) And here I thought "someone" was actually EATING their food! LOL!
That's a strwaberry, baby!
Looks like a moldy shrunken monkey head to me! (or a very rotten strawberry)
i guess apple. i just had my fifth baby, and can totally relate to your life. its great to know the stuff that happens to me happens to others. my daughter found her lunch boc under her bed the other day, and who knew chocolate grew orange mould?
I'm guessing a orange or apple.
That is some nasty, nasty crap!
EW!
An apple or what used to be an apple
A bite of hotdog?
A really old, really dead, long forgotten, probably taken without permission, and nibbled only a little STRAWBERRY!
I knwo lots of people already said that, but love your Mystery Picture contests. I'm just sorry you have to FIND the item to have us guess.
:) Shauna
DDDDDDDDDDDEEEEE LISCIOUS!
NOT~
A Strawberry with a bite taken out?
Totally gross though :-)
Good Lord! Is it Watermelon?
Emily
www.myemmybaby.com
For the 75th time...a strawberry?
First, let me start with - you are still fantastic!!! :-) and second, I am so creeped out by that picture I can't even explain the eebee jeebies (sound it out) that run down my spine every time I see that picture. I can't get that image out of my head, pahhhhleeeze tell me what it was in its former life b/c I seriously can't erase that picture from my brain-ICKO!
Keep on keepin' on!:-)
It's a strawberry, definately a strawberry
I think it's a blow pop that got forgotten...sticky on the outside to collect all the nastiness that comes with being under a couch.
Did any one say a plum?? That's my guess, A PLUM!!!
It looks like the remains of a hamster or mouse to me.
Ya know, after looking at this again, I think it's definitely a Plum or Pluot. And I'm guessing it was left by Brooklyn? I remember you saying that you were going to be giving her some this summer. See what you get for feeding your kids good stuff?? LOL!!
as i was scrolling through my 24 mo old starting yelling for the "doggy" i searched diligently for the doggy, then we came across this . . which is aparently a "doggy" that got lost in your house!
that or a fruit snack (welch's maybe?)
sorry if i posted this twice, my computer was fighting me!
Eww.. I want to say that it is a plum!
Christine
Raspberry, maybe blackberry.
I say some sort of meat.
Honestly it looks like a profile of Michael Jackson's head, lol. But, my guess is steak.
.....Does everyone at your house have all their body parts intact?????
I am so upset.. i posted a big thing stating my case and for some reason it never sent me to the in waiting approval page .. it just cleared out.
so i was gonna say stawberry but since like everyone did and i saw one the other day that was all shriveled up not juicy looking i would then go with apple or maybe hotdog ..but i have seen those a few times as well so my final answer by virtue of long shot and not seeing it before is...
--- Orange.. maybe a blood orange but maybe the red is from the umm experiment time..yeah thats it.
When I saw, while skimming the post, "It's probably just my thyroid," I thought you were potentially identifying the object. :)
oh, please tell us what it is! if i hold my breath any longer i am going to pass out and my two year old will be unsupervised . . .
OMG! If I hadn't read a later post that told me it was a strawberry, I would have guessed some sort of critter head! It looks like one. I mean, there's a nose, a vague head shape, even eyes show up if you squint at it right. Are you SURE it's a dead strawberry?
I think it was a Chocolate Dipped Strawberry and that the Chocolate was sucked off. Then the child took a bite and realized that REAL FRUIT is not as good as Chocolate (which is one of the main food groups, duh!), then the child threw the food away. (under the couch is the preferred trash can at my house). If it was my house, I would have checked to see if the Chocolate part was still good before tossing it.
