Sunday Sound Out

I went to my 20 year reunion last night and I'm so glad I did! It was really fun seeing everyone after 20 years. And, of course, it was a night out without Joe and kids! Joe stayed home because he didn't know anyone, he's not really a social kinda guy, and this way we didn't have to try and find a sitter. I really would have liked to have seen a lot more people there. We had 600-some kids in our class and just over 100 showed up. I found it strange that most of the people I remembered weren't from high school at all, but grade school. The people that were the most fun to see were ones I've known since kindergarten. I made a little slide show with the pics I took last night. I'm so mad that I didn't take more photographs; I just kept forgetting about my camera. I had to pull out some old class pictures to compare - what a hoot that was! (Sorry guys, I just had to do it!) Anyway, to any Vikings reading my blog, here are the few pictures I took last night. To all my non-Fremd readers, feel free to view the slide show or not. :)

The reunion ended at 11:00, but most people stayed until the place closed at 1:00. From there, several went on to another bar that stayed open later. I'm too old for that. I left with some friends (Thanks Brian for being the designated driver! You're very sweet!) and went to Steak and Shake for a bite to eat.

OK, on to viewer mail....

I read through all your posts hoping, wishing, waiting for your muffin recipe from the alternative lunch post. Could you PLEASE share your recipe, it looked so good.

Sure. Here ya go:

2 c. flour
1 c. packed brown sugar
1 T. baking powder
1 t. cinnamon
1/4 t. salt
1/4 t. baking soda
1/4 t. nutmeg
1/8 t. cloves
1 c. canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)
1/2 c. milk
2 eggs
1/3 c. shortening
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Throw dry ingredients in a bowl and combine with electric mixer. Add wet stuff and beat on high speed for a couple minutes. Add in the nuts. Pour into greased muffin cups and bake at 350 for, hmmm, I guess I've never really timed it. Just bake them until they're done.

My favorite part of your blogs are the photos! I love the photos of Brooklyn, but what about the rest of the kids, are they camera shy?
Yes! Especially Austin and Savannah. They don't like having their pictures taken and generally they don't get into stuff that triggers me to grab my camera. I haven't seen Austin smear diaper cream on his face in a long time. And Savannah doesn't generally mix soap, toothpaste, and deodorant in the bathroom sink, you know? And I try to respect the older ones' privacy. The little guys don't get a say. ;)

Hey i tried to vote for you for both best parenting and best humor but shows i voted already the last time you asked. So i guess i cant vote just wanted to let you know that i voted already. I hope you win i love ready your blog.
Awww thanks! You're right, you can only vote once. Thank you to everyone who voted for me. I've slipped from the running in the Mommy Blogger category though. :( I've gotten like 200 or so votes. If the rest of you 8000 or so daily readers want to vote, it's not too late. They're announcing the winners on Oct. 16th. The links for the Blogger's Choice Award categories for which I've been nominated are to the right there --->

Dawn, how do you get those pics of your kids like the one with Brooklyn and the cheese? Do you keep your camera in your pocket or something? :)
Doesn't everyone?

Yes it is worth it- My brother had the shots for his bee allergy , and he does not die when he gets stung by a bee anymore - he just feels sick and needs lots of shots :)
He doesn't die anymore, huh? That's good to hear.

Hmmm...and Inner Monica? What exactly does that mean?Signed,Monica
LOL! Just a Friends reference. I have all the episodes filed and catalogued in my brain. It's a scary place - my brain.

Normally I think allergy shots are a waste of time... but for something like bee stings (where the reactions tend to be more severe), I would consider it. Do you know what the success rate is?
I was told it was about 95% effective.

I have had allergy shots....not a big deal. After a while you don't even notice when they stick you.
It's not the needles I have a problem with. It's the fact that the office close to me only has office hours one afternoon a week and I'd have to take Brooklyn with me (the first several visits are 2 hours long) and I'd have to coordinate getting all my other kids home from school and taken care of while I'm there. The other office, with more convenient hours, is about 45 minutes away.

Are you the expert on bat poop?
Didn't you see that tidbit in my bio? Go ahead, ask me a question about guano! Any question!

I have a question for the SSO: We do a lot of camping also. We camp in a trailer. Most of the campgrounds we have checked out (we live in CO) have a 6 person max policy. 1) Do you camp in a trailer? If so, can you tell us about it. 2) Do you have to get 2 campsites or do they allow all 8 of you on 1 campsite. Thanks!
Yeah, we have a travel trailer. (I'll take pictures of it later this month.) Camping in a trailer is bad enough. There's no stinkin' way I'd camp in a tent with the family. I am not that insane yet. I've never seen a campground that wouldn't let us all stay on the same site. A lot of campgrounds around here charge extra per person over their limit of 4 or 6 or so, however. We avoid those places and go to campgrounds that have one price per family no matter how many kids you might have.

Hi dawn i have another SSO question: this is hypathetical but what if one of your childern was disabled in some way, like say one of you kids has a sight impairment. How would you balance the time specail treatment, medical bills etc with the cost of having other kids? I have 3 kids and my oldest is blind, I having such are hard time making sure that my other kids are cared for while I care for her. What would yo do?

You did an awesome job on the pictures. Looked like whatever you had in that mug made your horns fall off. LOL!!!!! I am going to my 45th reunion next week-end, and my husband loves to go to mine. He got to know some of my friends when we were dating, and has gotten to know other classmates at the previous reunions. They are all so nice to him, and we always have a really good time. We had over 400 in our graduating class, but a lot have passed, so we have invited the previous and following class to our reunions because we knew some of them also. I hope I remember to take that many pictures. I usually only get about 10 or so. You looked very pretty, even with the horns.

The pictures from your reunion were great (LOVE the song you chose to go with them)! You looked beautiful! Considering you wore the purple top from your "What Not To Wear" post, how could you have gone wrong? The shoes (toilet paper and all) are really CUTE!

All of you look like you had a great time. I especially love the pictures from "then". Did we all have the same look, or what??

Thanks for sharing!!!

SSO Question for next week....

OK I have four kids and I'm a little bit of a germophobe. I wash underwear separately in a hot water wash because I fear that poopy germs will get transferred between kids if I wash them with other clothes or a cold water wash with my nursing bras. Yuck!!! Is that over the top??? Do you just throw all the kids underwear in with the rest of the wash? I just need some common sense advice!!!!! Thanks!

Dawn, its great that you went to your class reunion! My 25th was a month ago, and I blew it off. I should have gone! But my next one I am going to!
Glad you had a good time!

Loved the pictures of your reunion! I made it to my 10th, was ready to pop baby #3 at my
20th, so missed that one, and lived 2,000 miles away to make my 30th. But I heard it was great! Everyone left early because no one remembered anyone else....and it was too close to 9:00 bedtime!

Thanks for sharing! You look absolutely beautiful!

On the allergy shots. While you will have to go to the office for testing, you can probably give yourself the shots. My nephew has had allergy shots for 16 years (I'm not sure I see the point, if you are going to have to have them for the rest of your life, but he's not my kid...), and my mom always gave them to him. He had an rx for syringes and an epipen, and the doc's office mailed the vials of allergen to their house.

I live in CO, too. I'm a novice camper, and last time we camped was at a place that had the 6-person rule, but there was a campsite near us that had a whole girl scout troop or something. There were about 6 tents set up and at least 10 people. So maybe they don't check up on you.

As an adult, I've only camped 3 times. Twice in a tent, which I actually prefer. It's ironic because I'm not very outdoorsy and I've always been pretty much anti-camping, but if I'm gonna do it, I want to sleep in a tent, not a hotel on wheels!

I'm glad to hear we aren't the only ones with convenient hours and offices together. Our ENT is the worst (I refuse to drive to Luteran General for a five minute appointment), and we *really* need to see him since we just found out that her tubes are in but no longer functioning AND she has an ear infection (not that it bothers her).

On the plus side, my doctor I've discovered has a very convenient Saturday morning acute illness clinic. And when I went I wasn't overreacting because Mister Man has bronchitis. Oops! :)

Regarding the muffin recipe--Just a tidbit from a mom who will do anything to get her kids to eat healthier. Substitute all or half of the white flour with whole wheat pastry flour (pastry flour is lighter than regular whole wheat flour). You can also substitute unsweetened applesauce or mashed banana for half of the butter or shortening. I also throw in a couple of spoonfulls of ground flaxseed. They'll never know the difference and I feel better.

Dude. Duuuuuuuuuuude! I'm so diggin' the pictures from the reunion! And I appreciate you not taking horrible Jabba-like pics of me. Heh.

BTW, we polished off half of the large Lou's I brought home, and the cake is in the fridge - quivering in fear. Thanks again for picking those up for me.

You wore the purple blouse! See we told you it was "Hot", and you sure proved it last night! It looks great on you, in fact you clean up really well and looked beautiful! Your pics were great also, it looks as though you all had a great time. Good for you.

I just Googled "Bat Guano" and your blog popped up at the top of the list. So, yes, you must be an expert on the subject. Hey, we've all got to be experts in something. Yours might as well be flying mammal poop.

Dawn,
Loved the slide show! It brought tears to my eyes and I didn't even go to grade school with those people.
It was great seeing you. I'm already looking forward to the next reunion!

I tried to vote for you. I registered (it won't let me vote without it) but I never received my registraiton confirmation email (yes, I checked junk mail as well as regular). I went back to the site and tried to vote again and it said I had to log in first, so I logged in. It wouldn't let me log in because it said I had not confirmed my registration from the email I received. I went to "contact us" and told them what was going on and what was my next step? That all happened the day you asked us to vote. I still heve not received a response and I can log in but I cannot vote because I'm not "officially registered" because I haven't responded to the confirmation email. Oh, by the way, I can't register again because I'm already registered. I'm fresh out of ideas so I'm really sorry I can't vote for you under any category because apparently I'm lost somewhere in cyberspace. Don't tell my husband, he thinks I'm here, taking care of things on the computer. You gotta love technology!

Dawn,
I don't know how to contact you except on the blog. I'd love it if you'd put my link on your blog. I also see you cook for a army (only kidding). If there is a spice you'd like to try I'd be glad to send you a sample.

I did look at it and hoped I saw people I knew because A LOT of people from that school went to college with me and you were only a year younger than m,e, but alas, I did not see people I knew!

I did go to college near there, though, so it was fun! My 20th was last year and I also went alone and had a blast. The spouses who were not in our class (too many were - EW!) were either bored or spent the whole time at the bar!

OK, I aboslutely love your blog so when I went to vote I thought I would check out your "competition". You have it hand over fist. The others are not funny at all.

First of all, to commenter #4, Germaphobe -
That is over the top. There, Dawn, now you don't have to say it.

And thanks for sharing your reunion pics. I hear that the one in 5 years is when you really don't recognize anyone. I skipped our 20 yr, and went to our 25 yr this summer. I, too, found that I mostly enjoyed the company of those I met in grade school.

I love that song, too. I'm sure you know it's the song from the last "Friends" episode.

You looked great, btw.

Love the reunion pics! Were you at Emmett's? I gal in my office went there Sat. night for dinner and said the place was packed with a 20 yr. HS reunion. She didn't realize she was with a blogging superstar! My husband's 40th was the same weekend. He didn't want to go, but I strongly suggested that he do some of the unofficial things, like riding on the float during the Homecoming parade and the after parade party. He had a blast and was really happy that he went.

Have fun in LA. You'll miss a fine parade at my house.

For the first commenter -- have you hooked up with National Federation of the Blind (nfb.org) and/or Parents of Blind Children (a division of NFB: http://www.nfb.org/nfb/Parents_and_Teachers.asp )?

I'm sure they have support groups where you can discuss with other parents of blind children balancing extra care for the blind child with care of your other children. It's not impossible, I've known people who have done it.

--the child of a Blind Parent, and I was an active member of NFB for the first 19 years of my life. Haven't had time since I went off to college, got married, and had a bunch of (sighted) children, but I have fond memories of those NFB National Conventions, and the little blind kids roaming freely (but supervised) with their tiny white canes were too cute!

Is it bad that my DH and I both thought of Monica Lewinski first?

It was moving seeing the then and now photos of your classmates. It has made me take more time to appreciate the "now" in my kids' lives. It's always so hectic with judo, soccer, gymnastics, psr, homework, etc. that they are growing up and I'm barely noticing the little kid in them slipping away. And on a different note, my husband loved the post about shopping with men. He said that is so true. I told him he was the exception and he's like "ya right". Keep up the great work. You're a gem!
