Amazing Similarities Between Animals and Toddlers

Southpaw, the Sox mascot. I'm not sure what the heck he is. A creature with moldy looking fur.

Some White Sox player. Don't ask me who. I'm not a Sox fan. It's either AJ or Toby.

Did you figure out who that first guy was? Well, this is the other one.

Is it ok that I had a sudden urge for a margarita and a cheeseburger when I saw this guy?

I can save you on car insurance! Really! I can! Come back here! Let me out!!!!

Toddlers do the same thing.

Prettiful, but he wouldn't cooperate and show off his feathers.

And yet another way a member of the animal kingdom is so very much like a toddler.

Yep, he is doing what it looks like he's doing. The kids were highly amused and announced to everyone within earshot, "The gorilla is picking his nose and eating it! Ewww!"

Yeah, it's a picture of giant plops of dog poop. What? Some people go to the zoo and take pictures of the animals, some people, uh, find more, um, "interesting" things to take pictures of.

Brooklyn lay down in this tube and refused to leave. I had to carry her, kicking and screaming out of here.

And this is what happened when I took her out. It's pretty much how she spent the next half hour or so. A zoo trip just isn't a zoo trip without a meltdown from Brooklyn.

My kids' favorite zoo memory is that of watching a rhinoceros pee. It was pretty impressive, I must say.

It looks quite peaceful in that blue tube. A respite from the sun, the siblings, the noise and everything else. I would've melted down too if someone dragged me out of my resting spot before I was ready! ( smile... I have a 2 1/2 yr old, he does the same thing )

I totally agree with the parrot! I took my 1.5yo to the aquarium where they just happened to have a parrot out with a trainer. That bird taught my son how to make the most awful noises. Right after that fateful meeting my son could do the most accurate parrot tantrums impressions. I would rather just hear him scream but no I get ear splitting parrot shrieks.

You know why gorillas have big fingers, don't you?? Because they have bg fingers!!! Hahahaha!! One of my dad's favorite jokes!

I'm heading to the National Zoo in DC tomorrow with my brood (only 3- so it would be like a vacation for you!), so I'm looking forward to public tantrums by my 2-year-old, emotional meltdowns by my 8-year-old ADHD-riddled one, and hopefully lots of naps in the stroller from the 8-month-old. Yea! And the zoo is somehow, defyingly, ALL UPHILL... so that should make the double stroller really easy to push. Let's hear it for the zoo!

So, have you thought about the fun you are going to have with Brooklyn during her teens and pre-teens.

Oh lordy, I hope you are still blogging then. These are going to be some fun times ....... for me!

I was just as freaked out by that same rhino sign, and I'm pretty sure I took a picture of it, too! I did miss the dog waste, probably because the three boys we were with were in that blue tunnel and wouldn't get out then suddenly got out and RAN.

Yay to the gorilla. More proof that there's nothing wrong with picking your nose and eating it. Strike another blow to civility!

Haha!! I didn't know you were a parrothead! That's great!

That last photo of Brooklyn portrayed the exact same expression as was on my three-year-old's face when I put him in the tub tonight. He was screaming and sobbing and saying, "I'm not dirty!" Oh, how I wished I had a video camera to capture that dirty, dirty face as those words were declared over and over again! Now, he's in bed, fighting to stay awake. And, I'm reading your blog and thinking, "Thank you Dawn for reminding me that I'm not the only one with a kid going through this stage!"

Maybe Brooklyn was wanting a chance to mark her territory. Did you ever consider that?

First of all...that Southpaw mascot thing...so looks like something straight out of Dr. Suess.

I love your zoo pictures. Cannot believe they have a display of poo...too funny. Glad to know I'm not the only mom with a tantrum throwing child. I went shopping today and sent my two girls to daycare...I spend good money to that place...they need to be there. And I got some grown up momma all by herself time. God it was nice.

I think your gorilla is really a junior-higher. If you take another look at your pics, he's doing the old "scratching/picking/signaling" with his middle finger, but it's his first finger that he stuck in his mouth. He pulled a "psych!" on you! It's probably what they all sat around laughing about tonight after the zookeepers left.

"Ha! Did you see the one with 5 little monkeys taking pictures of me 'picking my nose'? She was all grossed out when I put my finger in my mouth but I used my other finger!"

I seem to sense a pattern with your little angel. I sensed a pattern with my little angel when on trips with her to the store, unless I let her nickel and dime me to death, she would have a fit. So, to no longer having to deal with her tantrum or my broke pocket book, I solved two problems at once. I told her in no uncertain terms, she was never coming with me shopping again. Voila! No more broke and no more tantrums in front of strangers. Best move I made in years.

Oh she looked so peaceful in that blue tube! Maybe you could find one for your backyard... ;)

We went to the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo on Weds. I thought the same with the geckos. I guess we are trained. As for the marking the territory sign, the same can be said of teenage boys. Is the last picture a new one of Brooklyn or do you just use the same one each time? ; )If it is different you could make a collage!

hehe for Brooklyn. She pretty much makes that same face in all meltdowns. But either way shes cute, but obviously a handful.
Bet you are waiting for school to start aren't u?

I think kids like zoos so much because they can laugh at their own animal behavior in a safe environment. I'm just wondering where the frazzled animal moms are at the zoo. They must be so dangerous that they have to lock them up.

Hi Dawn!
I just have to ask you, since you must have more experience than I do with toddler outbursts, how the h*** do you handle them!? My two-year-old is a real sweet child most of the time, but she sometimes throws fits where she absolutely hates her father. "Dad is not allowed to watch my tape!" "I don't like daddy!" "Go away dad!". And he gets hurt and walks away. But I just had surgery, I can't deal with her because my whole stomache looks like a six-year-olds attempt to do embroydery. Please tell me this will go away! And how shall we handle her? Please Dawn, you are my domestic goddess, do you have any advice?

I have a 7 year old niece named Brooklynn - maybe it's the name. She and your daughter are cut from the same cloth :-)

Dawn, I love Brooklyn's top for the Zoo Day. And I happen to think the pictures from when she is crying are still pretty cute.

LOL! Love the poop pictures!
I just had the family down to NC and we went to the zoo in Myrtle Beach and also took a pic of a sign warning of animal's spraying. Freaked me out because my kids kept annoying the animals and Iwas SURE one would get sprayed. EWWWW!

PS Thought you'd like to know we have caught 2 more bats flying in our house!

The first picture is AJ. Come on they look nothing alike and the only thing that they have in common are they are both WHite Sox catchers.

Broklynn looks like you! Not the tantrum part but in the face. :)

Hehe! I have almost the EXACT same picture of the peacock that we took on August 2nd at Brookfield.

Maybe you were one of the other women that I shoved aside... I mean, skillfully maneuvered around... trying to get a picture of that crazy kird hanging out with the baboons. =P

Lol! Love the pictures and the trip to the zoo. Kids love those adventures, don't they? :)

Must've been Brookfield - I'd recognize that rhino-pee sign anywhere. And yes, I took my own pic of it as well.

OK! I'll admit it!! I'd take a photo of poop if it has a nice interesting arty shape to it. GROSS!!! I know....

the rhino thing...we were at the San Diego zoo years ago, riding in the tour bus-which must mean before we had kids, because we would never pay to take all 4 kids on it now...so, 16 years ago, maybe? Anyways we are on the bus and stop in front of the rhino exhibit, no cage just a wall...and we saw one do this to some poor lady standing in front of the wall. It was horrible. and I was glad it wasn't me.
