Lots to Say

Lots to say. What are the chances I'll remember everything?

1. Check out my latest review on the HP Photo Center HERE!

2. I went for another mammo yesterday. The technician took 3 pictures. I'll admit that these were more painful because she just took pictures of a particular spot and she used a paddle the size of a coffee cup to smash compress my boob. Still, in the whole scheme of things, it wasn't that bad. I mean, the compression only lasts for a few seconds. Labor is WAY more painful. So are kidney stones. So is strep throat. So are toothaches. So are headaches. So is stubbing your toe on the stupid couch.

So, I sat down and thumbed through the December issue of Ladie's Home Journal. I read all about the Mccaughey septuplets turning 10 (Remember them? It seems like they were just born last year!) She returned to the room and informed me that they needed a couple more pictures. These were even more fun. I can't remember what she called them - "roll something or other", but what she did was take the skin on the top and pull it one way, while pulling the skin on the bottom the opposite way. Yeah, that was fun. Still, I'm telling ya, papercuts hurt more. So does burning yourself with a curling iron. So is getting elbowed in the nose by your two year old in the middle of the night.

Click, click. She disappeared again while I thumbed through the magazine some more. I learned how to decorate my home in festive ways for the holidays and some terrific Christmas gift ideas(which will come in handy SEVEN months from now!) Anyway, after I'd read the magazine cover to cover, she came back and told me that she needed just one more picture. Click.

When she returned after my third photo session, she broke the news that they were still unsure of the spot and wanted me to get an ultrasound. Sure thing! Too few people have seen my boobs today. Bring it on!

The technician did the ultrasound and told me she'd be right back. Ten minutes went by and as I lay there, I thought, "Hmmm this is strange. I should be freaking out right about now, shouldn't I? I could have something very wrong with me. This could be serious. I should be worrying like crazy, right?" But I wasn't. I was absolutely calm. I thank God for the total peace I felt while waiting. And I also thank God that everything is fine and dandy. Can I get an "Amen"?

3. Jax got his cast on this afternoon. Get this - it's waterproof! When some people wrote a comment on my blog telling me that I should get a waterproof cast for him, I thought it meant a cast that was water resistant and wouldn't deteriorate if a little water splashed on it. Nope. It's totally waterproof. I mean - submersible! He can shower and swim with this thing! Whoever invented this was a genius! And he only needs to keep it on for 3 to 4 weeks! Wow, things have sure changed since our last broken bone. Of course, Jackson has discovered that his cast is really hard and makes a nice tool of destruction. Ugh

Doesn't that white, waterproof stuff look weird?

4. Jackson has Vitiligo. His spots have more than doubled in size since last year. I don't know if I have any readers here who have this, but I thought I'd include a link to Vitiligo Support International's 2008 National Conference in San Antonio.

5. One of my readers brought THIS to my attention. I had no idea about it until she gave me a head's up. Thanks Wendy!

6. And last, but not least, I was totally honored to be invited to speak at the BlogHer conference in San Francisco this July! If you haven't registered to go, it's not too late. In fact, you can go HERE to enter for a free ride to the conference! What could be better than going to BlogHer? Going with free registration, airfare and hotel, of course! Rago has a contest that ends May 30. You just leave a comment for that one. There's another contest where you can nominate your favorite Blogging hero who inspires you. That contest ends May 31. SO GET ON IT and I'll see you there!

6 1/2. Oh great. I just lost another filling as I was writing this! Serves me right for munching on cereal when I should have been eating something healthier and lower cal like water. Now I have 2 broken teeth that need fixing. Ugh. Will it never end?

In re broken teeth: I'm afraid it IS likely to end, with a complete set of artificial ones in a jar.

Tell me that cast isn't going to smell bad after a few wettings!

And congrats on the clean bill of health. It is interesting how motherhood changes our idea of pain, isn't it? I'd take a mammogram over a 2-year-old headbutting me under my chin, any day...

My son has vitiligo as well, and
I noticed his spots were getting bigger and more. time to apply the steroids and get him some Chicago sun....haha..Chicago sun...

Dawn said...

LOL! Chicago sun! That's a good one! Actually, it was 90 on Monday and then 40 on Tuesday! A 50 degree difference in 24 hours! Crazy!

Ugh... I did not know there was such a thing as a water proof cast. My daughter got one on her leg today (orange also). We live on Camp Pendleton and i'm sure the Naval Hospital does not carry them. We only have all the old outdated stuff ( makes me so mad because "our heroes" deserve the best)!!!!

Dawn said...

Lisa, I agree! That's just wrong.

Dawn,
Thrilled to hear you had a clean bill of health! Thank God! (and, wow, you were amazingly calm! I was FREAKING just reading you describing it.)
How awesome that you will be speaking! I just was on BlogHer and saw it mentioning the conference...hmmmm...
:) Debi
ps LOVE the cool ORANGE cast!

After all that, I am sure glad you are ok...I mean except for your tooth. I would have a mammogram, over strep any day. Strep hurts worse than giving birth.

Congratulations on the clean bill of health. Sorry for the broken arm. What a cool cast. One to keep in mind should my munchkin decide to break something. Living in FL your always in water somewhere. It's great to see a waterproof cast. Congrats on the speaking engagement. Sounds like a blast. Take care.

Heather said...

I didn't know waterproof casts existed either. That's awesome! Hope all is well with the boob tests. I agree it's better to stay calm. They have to fully check everything out before they can really give a diagnosis. It's good they are being so thorough.

Anonymous said...

Lisa, it may not be the fact it's a Naval Hospital, but what type of break it was.

My daughter several years ago broke her elbow, she was given a water proof cast..LOVED it and was perfect for our trip to Vegas just a few days later. :sigh:

My stepson broke his ankle last month but they gave him a regular cast. A "poor tech almost called for Ralph" type of cast.

So it could have something to do with the type of break and where it's at. I also wonder if we'd not asked for the waterproof cast for my daughter if they'd have given it to us, so it may be that you have to ask for those.

AMEN
Glad the mammo thing is over and a good turn out. You may have encouraged a lot of ladies to get their own mammograms done.

AMEN!!! I'm glad everything turned out ok with your boob squishing! And thanks for giving us all something to compare the pain to. = )

I am glad to hear that there is now a water-proof cast! It is about time!!! A friend's child needed one too. But his arm is out of the cast because the swelling went down and he just slid the cast off. YIKES!! What a 4 year old boy will do?!?! LOL!

My daughter gets her new one on on June 5. I was considering the waterproof stuff so that she can swim and shower and all that neat stuf. But I wondered exactly how they did that. I still think that once wet it will just be a gross mess on her arm. And, I do need to pay extra for that .... Please let us know how it fares when actually wet and maybe what it feels like inside the cast (that is really what I want to know .. lol).

I am really glad to hear the mammo went well!

Waterproof casts are great (had lots of experience unfortunately). Just make sure to get them thoroughly wet every day. Keeps the stink factor down (as much as you can).

I think my daughter has vitiligo. She hasn't been diagnosed, but she's always had these strange spots on her tummy. Her doctor was never concerned about it, so we didn't do anything about it. Looks like it's time to look into it!

I'm so proud of you for going through all those pictures like a champ! It's hard, but definately worth it!! Did'ya get anymore stickers??

Tell Jax we're thinking of him and we LOVE his cast!

Be well!!

Hi Dawn, I am a long time reader. I know the viral power your blog has. I don't know if you have read this or not but here is a link to the story about this little boy, Alex. There is also a link to a blog that is collecting cards for this little boy. Thanks, ~Becca

OK, so... my 6 year old daughter just got a cast a week ago. I asked about a waterproof one like a few friends had suggested... and the nurse looked at me like I told him I was 35 and had just lost my first baby tooth - like I was simply batty.

Lucky.

How did your son break his arm? Not how as in what was he doing that he broke it, since you already blogged about that, but how as in did he only break one of the bones or or did he break both of the bones? But hooray for only being in the cast for 3-4 weeks!

Also, yays for your clean bill of health!

Have a great day!!

1. Hooray! So pleased the mammo came up negative

2. Congrats on being mentioned in that essay

3. Thanks for the info on Vitiligo

4. Bummer about the tooth! Have fun at the dentist. No, it never ends.

5. My son would like to say "I like turtles 'n' cheese."

6. He's 12. There is no hope for him. He will always be nuts. =)

Hi Dawn, I have been reading your blog since the e-bay auction came out. I think you are an inspriration to many mom's out their who love their children, but also cherish the quiet moments we have all to ourselves. The reason I am commenting to you, is that I hope other mom's will read this, and pray for this family. A brother and sister from the christian group Selah has lost 2 infants to death, in less then 7 weeks. She has been blogging about it here: http://audreycaroline.blogspot.com
All you mom's out there, please, please pray for this family.

Congrats all around! Most importantly for the clean bill of health--whew! Also congrats for the speaking invitation and for being mentioned on Fox. Wow!

Dawn, Dawn, Dawn. Did you seriously just ask Will it never end? Murphys Law clearly states that if you ask this question, then no..it will never end..lol. This should cheer you up...Summer is just beginning. Plenty of opportunities for it to never end. I'm not trying to be mean or depress you, I'm just trying to cheer myself up because I'm in the same boat and now I know I won't be paddling it alone!

Glad all is well with the mammogram!

Better get to a dentist Dawn. I just had a root canal this morning because I neglected my own teeth in favor of my children (including still nursing 5 month old).

And the cast, VERY cool. I need to remember that for my son. Im sure he will need that info some day.

Michelle said...

Yep, you definitely have to give us an update on the waterproof cast. That idea just freaks me out, personally!

And glad your mammogram(s) finally got completed and came out well. Did you ever think that maybe they just loved your boobs so much and that was why they kept doing it again and again? Silver lining, right?

Janet said...

And the people said AMEN! Although I might beg to differ on the strep throat thing. I've had strep throat since Sunday (along with both kids and hubby with bronchitis). I'd take it over the mammogram any day.

Thanks for the link to Vitiligo. the guest speaker, Lee Thomas, is on our local Fox station. He did a feature on himself awhile ago. I also see some of my students with this disease.

Congrats on the clean bill of health.

Amen indeed! My son broke his leg too soon, I guess, to get a waterproof cast. My mammogram turned out fine, too, but I had the kind where you lay face down on a table with your (very small) boob through a hole in the table, and they position the mammogram clamp thing under you and hold you in it for four hours while they thread anaesthetic needles into you/it and then jolt "clips" into it to mark where the scary spots are. And then biopsy those. Did I mention it was all fine? Thank heaven for modern medicine. And my doctor even offered to buy me lunch afterward.

Hey Dawn. I've been reading for a while and have only commented once. However, I just had to comment on vitiligo. I've had vitiligo since I was about 7 years old. I'm now 27...wow I've had it 20 years now! Tell Jackson to hang in there. I honestly think it makes you a stronger person. You HAVE to be comfortable in your own skin, literally. I wouldn't say that it's a blessing, but it has definitely helped me build character!

Yes, you most certainly can! AMEN!!! And for extra good measure - AMEN again!!! :-) I'm very relieved for you! Blessings to you and yours.

Amen sister. I'm glad you are negative ; )

AMEN!!!! When I broke my foot, I did not have a waterproof cast or any kind of cast. I got some weird kind of boot cast and it was 6 weeks till I could even walk in the boot! And even worse, I had never used crutches before! Talk about painful! anyway, Tell jax im praying for him about the arm and the vitiligo,
Bye

"Women Who Have Several Kids May Lose More Teeth"

No Joke - this was just the headline of a news story on the 11:00 news. I know you said it was just a filling, but I thought of you =D

Also glad to hear your boobs are healthy.

And, congrats to you on BlogHer and your speaking. And cool comment pointed out by Wendy.
Ok - good night!

I'm a long time reader, but first time commenting. Your writing always brightens my day. Thank you!

My vitiligo showed up right after my chicken pox, age six, now over thirty years ago. My headaches started then too. There does seem to be a link between vitiligo and celiac disease. Going wheat free helped my headaches and my white spots stopped growing.

Blessings to Jackson as he faces the world with this condition. Some of the strange questions stayed with me and now make me laugh. My all-time favorite was, "Did you suntan with little bits of paper on you?"

Um no?

Congrats on being negative! Aren't you glad you went? Now you will know how to decorate for Christmas! :)

Glad you got the waterproof one! A bit more expensive but sooooooo worth it! My soon to be 13 yr old broke his are at 2 while at daycare! Waterproof cast. Then 4 years ago he was swinging on a neighbors swingset and jumped off while high in the air.....omg I want to be sick thinking about it! Neighbor kid comes up to the door and calmly says I think Connor broke his arm! I went running down the street in my bare feet and find him laying on the ground with his arm at an angle it shouldn't have been! Thank God hubby was with police dept then and had his hand held scanner to call for ambulance! Surgery to set arm....then once cast came off he was goofing off with a friend and friend landed on his arm....yep... rebroke it! But he could bathe, swim, and I loved it!

and great news on your boobie outcome!

My 5 year old just got put into her first cast this week for a broken arm. She slipped on the tile floor after getting out of the bath.
While chewing on some ice the other night (I know, I know...) I had a filling fall out of one of my molars. Then 2 nights later while having some popcorn at the drive-in, my whole tooth broke apart!!
Did you win the lottery or anything good? 'Cause it seems like I'm copying you.
