Gross Food Find Contest

Inspired by my friend, Michelle over at My Semblance of Sanity, I'm doing a Gross Food Find Contest. You know, since I can't manage to go a week without finding some disgusting food item left somewhere in my house.
Joe found this in Jackson's bed while helping him look for his tin whistle. Leave me a comment with your guess as to what on earth it is and the first person with the most correct answer will win. I'll annouce the winner on Friday. The prize will be a set of new Tupperware containers to help keep your food fresh even when it's been in a backpack for a month. :)

Mmmmmm, now that's good eats!

Dear God!!!! I agree...hopefully your DH just pulled back the sheets and found it like that. Did he put on a hazmat suit and get some long-handled tongs to get it out of the bed?

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Mac 'n' cheese?

Anonymous said...

Ewwwww....looks like an old dead tuna sandwich. What the heck did it smell like after being in the bed for heck knows how long?

Looks like a hot dog roll with cream cheese...ugh lol

When my kids were small,I would tear apart the closet because I could always smell moldy oranges and inevitably I would find them buried under shoes, coats, scarfs etc lol They always threw they're backpacks in the closet and all kinds of interesting?? things got buried in there!

Love your blog! I'm new to it and am working my way thru your archives and laughing so hard I cry! lol Brings back great memories of dealing with small children on a daily basis.

I think it's the decomposed remains of a turkey sandwich. Maybe with cheese, maybe not.

Jen said...

I am going to go with lunch meat by that last photo......makes me wonder what could be hiding in my house.....

Eternal Sunshine said...

Oooh gross! I even went so far as to click on the pictures to get a closer look, and still I'm not sure.

It looks a bit like parmesan cheese or maybe some sort of sandwich.

IN his bed? I'm thinking of how long he has been sleeping with that... THING. **shudder**

Anonymous said...

I'm guessing a pancake.

i'm going to say chicken pot pie. you should turn that over to science! wow!

Lynne's Somewhat Invented Life said...

A sandwich, with mayonaise or perhaps it is Miracle Whip, mustard, some cotton batting that the child thought was cotton candy and so he thought he'd add that when you weren't looking, a piece of white cheese--and that's why it wasn't eaten, Jackson looked at it and said, "I'm not eatin' something that has no artifical coloring," and then, some chips, smooshed in there just in case he wanted some crunch. That's my guess and I'm sticking to it just like Jo did when he had to pull that mess out. You are a brave woman to post such a picture--I hope the microbes didn't attack the camera and hope that Jo's lungs are okay.

Thanks, once again for the amazingly good laugh.

FrugalcosIhave2 said...

Tuna sandwich? or chicken? is that cheating? You win the gross food contest though.

Anonymous said...

Ugh. I tried to post this yesterday but I don't see my comment anywhere. My guess is: French Toast! You can see the crus tof the bread and what looks to be now crunchy egg crusting. Yummm! Delicious!

LLW said...

That is nasty....ugh!

I'm going with pie as well, maybe lemon or a lemon square!

The Gang's Momma! said...

My guess is a cheese and mayonnaise sandwich on white (well, it used to be white!) bread.

Lowa said...

Ok well it looks like four separate things to me. Is it all the same item?? Just fouur different shots?? I can guess once you clear that up for me please:) IF you have time!

Becky said...

Pimento cheese sandwich?

Kelly said...

eeewwwww! It looks like it was an Egg McMuffin type breakfast sandwich....

Anonymous said...

A banana.

Michelle

Anonymous said...

My uneducated guess is a tuna sandwich? Pic's 1 & 2 look like bread is burried under all of that mold. Pic #3 I can't figure. The last pic looks like tuna. I can't figure what else would "flake" quite like that... The flakes are too thick to be pie crust...

Either way, this is way to gross to even consider! Yuck! Gross! Blech!

Johane.Levesque@rogers.com

Rae said...

my guess is a sandwich made with pimento cheese spread.

Anonymous said...

I would have to say a grill cheese sandwich or a ham and cheese sandwich.

I'd put my money on a ham and cheese sandwich. If it was pizza, he'd already had eaten it. And kids don't walk around eating lasagne with their bare hands unless they can sneak it passed their mother... ;-)

Anonymous said...

tuna noodle casserole

Anonymous said...

I would say it is probably a piece of pumpkin pie leftover from Thanksgiving. Not that I doubt your housekeeping skills, but kids stash stuff in the weirdest places!

Bigmammy said...

Pimento cheese sandwich????
Yuck

Apple Pie

it looks like a thick slice of whole wheat bread... i've heard that stuff molds something fierce.

Bigmammy said...

My kids joined in on the un. They guess grilled cheese (and they should know)

Abby said...

peanut butter & fluff sandwich?

TheHMC said...

Oh yes, I must agree that it's some sort of cheese sandwich. At first I thought maybe a grilled cheese, but the last pic has the cheese(or what I believe to be cheese) looking layered almost. So maybe a ham and cheese? Hm.

Oh, and I hear ya. We have the "all food and drink stays in the kitchen only" rule, but with my oldest two being capable of getting through the baby gate(they ARE 9 and 8 now, after all lol) and ransacking my kitchen, I find all KINDS of treasures around my house.

I think my fave was the chocolate fudge pop-tart I found behind our toilet once.

At least, I hoped it was chocolate fudge.

Christine said...

That is disgusting.

I will guess anyway...a piece of apple pie

I'm going to have to guess a Pillsbury Cinnamon Roll.

I tried to post this earlier, but I don't see it, so here it goes again...Is it a Grands Flaky Biscuit? Yum! Hope your husband has survived the trauma! Love your blog and can't wait for your book!

Josephine Milkweed said...

Apple pie, due to the flaky not-so-goodness under the mold. Why would someone bring apple pie in the bed?

Anonymous said...

I'm guessing an english muffin!

Anonymous said...

I have no idea what that is but I'm kinda curious if you found this in your childs bed, how often do you change his sheets? Yikes.

Anonymous said...

It looks like it used to be a ham and cheese sandwich or chicken sandwich. Yuck!!

Megan said...

A candy bar?

Shari said...

I'm guessing a cheddar cheese stick.

Disgusting, regardless. :0)

Tina said...

I'm guessing a soft taco, meat and cheese only.

Love your blog!

Anonymous said...

From the first photo, my guess was originally banana bread.

The middle two don't help, and the last one really reminds me of some apple bread I once had that went bad.

I am curious how you could NOT "smell" this? I could see perhaps if it was in the back of the fridge, or bottom of the bread drawer wrapped up, or even better in a container that your kids put away and you find it later, and then they go "oh yeah, I left a surprise for you"..........

Please tell me though that you disinfected his bed, or at least the screen for me - now I am going to go and scrub myself down I feel gross!!!

Loth said...

My seven year old son says, with some authority, that it is "cool". So there.

Anonymous said...

I'm voting for lasagna!

Miss Melissa said...

I do not know what that is.

I DO know that it snapped at me and I'm frightened.

Anonymous said...

Durn it! LLD said what I thought it was! I actually thought no one would guess the same thing, but I think it WAS a lemon square, or chess pie. You know how kids are... Oh, pleeeeeeeeeeease, let me have one! Then after they get it, and don't like it, they don't know where to put it. In the bed, of course. True story; I was cleaning out the van, and lifted the back seat to find a crusty old chicken bone. Yep, a drumstick, all dried out, had taken up residence in the back of my car. I was furious. So now we measure everything by the chicken leg-o-meter. "That's nasty as a chicken bone!" or "That's almost as gross as a chicken bone!" So it looks like you have a new meter by which to judge all manner of gross-ness. Congratulations!

Susan said...

It's an egg mcmuffin!!

Common guess, but I'm leaning toward cheese sandwich. Blech.

A ham and cheese sandwich is my guess. Good luck choosing a winner. It'll take a year just to read all of these comments.

Welll hmmm I am really not sure other then this is NASTY looking! If I had to force a guess I would say pineapple upside down cake just because the last pic reminds me of pineapple rings....

A brownie? Regardless, kudos to you for managing NOT to throw up while cleaning it up!

I think it is a grilled cheese sandwich. But hey that camera takes awesome pictures what is it and how did you get such detail?

Anonymous said...

I recently came across your blog-WOW, I have been missing some AWESOME stuff. Anyway, that is definitely lemon merengue pie (sp?). The first picture makes it quite clear (yes, I have small children, too, lol). It's in surprisingly good condition considering it was in bed with him and didn't get all smashed up.

I've already guessed but I had to get your back...I mean really people-it's just pictures. The people who said they couldn't look at it are just prissy...that's all there is to it. I'm sitting here eating my oh-so-yummy microwaved lasagna and have not heaved yet. My dd didn't understand the pics so I asked her if she wanted to grow some mold...she turned me down but I have a feeling we'll be trying to mold all kinds of food by the end of hte week...that's how we homeschoolers roll.

Oh Dawn I am learning so much from your blog...just today I learned that you should occasionally look in your child's bed to find such delicious snacks, but more importantly, I learned that as you are checking for treats, you should change the sheets. Now who would have thought!!! Anyway! My guess for mystery food is Lou Malnati's pizza!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Methinks a ham and cheese hotpocket!

Did you see the X-files where these ancient hibernating insects were accidentally awakened by some overzealous loggers and at night that would swarm living things in the dark and wrap their human prey in cocoons and suck all the moisture out of them? If not, that is what it looks like to me.

Stacie said...

Looks like next week's blue cheese dressing! YUM.

Nancy said...

Did you actually know what it was, or did your son have to tell you? I can't even imagine.

Liz's Random Thoughts said...

Lasagna?
Either that or you kid was hopeing that the mold would turn into a shape of the vigin Mary. Or Jesus Christ or something? Than have you sell it on ebay and his college fund would be taken care of....Than again considering how old your son is. It's probably leftover lasagna that in a mad rush to clean a room or find a toy got stashed under the bed.

Unknown said...

those marshmallow pie things.. Moon Pies I think they are called?

my guess is a tuna salad sandwich.... although my husband says cake of some sort... yuck!

I am going to guess Lasagna

Kristi-Anna said...

Well, I know I'm not the FIRST to guess... wow, you havea lot of readers :D

Anyway, My first thought from pictures 1 and 2 is a piece of lemon merangue pie.

From the last 2 photos... perhaps mac 'n cheese... ew.

Shelley said...

I didn't read through nearly 300 comments to see if anyone guessed this already, but my guess is a piece of lasagna. I hope I'm wrong, really.

Is it pie al a MOLD?? HA, couldn't resist.
My son quesses cream filled chocolate donut thingy.
My guess would be an egg and cheese sandwich on wheat bread.
Those close up pics look really kinda cool. Like maybe some sorta rock formation or something lol. I didn't realize mold could get that fluffy. Interesting!!

Ellen said...

My hubby and i agreed on brownie. :) Thats a likely item a boy would stash in his bed!

The suspense is killing me! (I have no life and am currently avoiding helping a child to research the pygmy marmoset..)

Also, if it's grilled cheese, I WAS FIRST... also my link didn't post so hopefully I'll do it right.

And boo to the judgmental comments on food practices and sheet changery.

OK, after staring for a long time, and making my hubby sick by having him look at the moon surfaces you pictured, I think I have it.

Half-eaten Blueberry Bagel, with whatever you put on that... and it grew a marshmallow-thick layer of cotton from his toe jam. (you did say it was IN his bed!)

I'm thinking it's something yummy from Christmas dinner. Hummm... perhaps turkey and stuffing? Of course if you're a vegetarian (sp?) it would be Tofurky and stuffing. I really have no idea, but for some reason felt I must guess. I will say that at one point I did have something in the refrigerator, in a container, mold so bad that it was not only unidentifiable but it turned into mold powder. Yeah, gross. Thanks for the gross photos - they helped me survive another diet day.

Anonymous said...

How did you take pictures of that...living creature without barfing? I say when it's been there long enough to grow legs, it can take itself out.

Anonymous said...

My guess, an English muffin with butter on it.

Okay, here I am always coming in a little late.

But I say... egg, egg, egg sandwich with lots of pretty green mold, for added flavor.

And may I add that this leaves me with a lovely picture to go to sleep with.

The first picture looks like a sandwich, then in another picture it looks like a pasty but you can't buy those in the states last time I was there anyway. I am just feeling a bit la de da because I might have just found someone who changes their kids bedding even less frequently than me and that is yet another reason to love you and your blog.

My official guess (without reading all 328 other answers) is a Bisquit...and if I really had to get technical it's either a buttery bisquit or a cheesy bisquit (like as in the kind in the fridge section of the supermarket that you pop the tube and bake).... or homemade if you are into that sort of betty crackhead mombo jombo....

Anonymous said...

I've seen this before!! Or at least something very similar. It was in the bottom of my fridge though.

My guess is Chicken Helper. Thanks Betty C. ;).

My child has a loft bed and under it she has various forms of dead things. You make me scared to go back under there. You have my sympathy completely.

Smashed grapes in a smiley face pattern.

Also found an orange under the bed that probably has been there since Christmas.

I think you have me beat on this one. Yuck.

Could it possibly be the remains of a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit?

Maybe one of those Hostess/Dolley Madison apple pies. It's sort of like a train wreck. Makes me a bit nauseous to look at, but I just can't stop analyzing it! And sweet mother of all things holy, how in the world was he able to SLEEP with that thing in his bed?!
