Green Goblin Strikes Again

I'm so excited about the new blog I started to review unique products and businesses of stay-at-home moms! I did my first review this week for my friend Angie at Good For The Kids. Her site traffic increased by 900% on the first day and her sales went through the roof! Unfortunately, my review blog looks a little umm, boring and plain, and since I have the computer skills of your average squirrel, I partnered up with Angie, who knows how to make a nice website. (She knows how to spell too!) The new site, Mamas Like, will be up and running Monday. Stop by and read about the great work-at-home mom's company I'll be profiling!

No, it's not mold. It isn't a skin disease, nor is it a rash. It's one of those darn markers that keep reappearing!

Isn't my highchair pretty, Mommy?

My tooth hurts. I mean, it REALLY hurts. Remember, I've given birth to six kids without epidurals and I've had several kidney stones. If I say something hurts, it HURTS. Have you ever heard the saying, "Have a baby, lose a tooth"? My dentist says I'm the poster child for that slogan. I never had bad teeth as a child. Even as an adult, I only acquired a couple cavities. That is, until kids. Seriously, with each pregnancy, I've gotten four, five, even six cavities each time. Literally. My smile is made up of more filling than teeth.

Last year I had a root canal. As unpleasant as it was sitting there with my mouth pried open, spit sucker slurping away, dentist filing what was left of my tooth, and smooth jazz elevator music playing in the background, I have to admit it was kind of nice. I mean, no one said, "Moooom he took my homework" or "Mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy" or "Can I have candy for dinner?" or "make her get out of my room!" I got to sit down lie down for a good hour! I didn't have to scrape gum off my son's sock (don't ask), clean cocoa powder up off the bathroom floor (perfectly normal thing to do), or try and figure out how the baby got tomato sauce in her hair when all she had to eat is scrambled eggs.

Now tell me, how else would you ever get the chance to sit down, let alone lie down, during the course of a regular day? You know what happens when you take a chance and lie down for a few minutes on a regular day at home. Pencils with big star erasers and wads of paper towels get shoved down the toilet and cinnamon-sugar mixture gets dumped on the carpet, the hot water mysteriously turns on full blast in the bathroom, marker drawings appear on the carpet, and graham cracker crumbs cover every conceivable surface in the house. So, I've heard. Ahem.

Anyway, after my root canal, I got a crown, so technically, I'm a princess now. I hope I don't need another one, but I'm pretty sure it isn't natural or normal for your tooth to cause so much pain and swelling that it looks like you're a chipmunk storing nuts for the winter. It figures I'd need another root canal since I just finished paying off my last one. Looks like my dentist will be getting that summer home after all!

I only have one son, but had the joy of experiencing labor au naturale for 21 hours ... then his heart rate went down to 60 and the hospital record for the fastest emergency c-section EVER (11 minutes from decision to birth, 2.5 minutes from incision to baby out) was set on us. My 15 minutes of fame I would have rather spent on something else! But all was well, and I honestly don't know what I would have done if I'd had more. I was busy with one, I can't even imagine six! In defense of me, and I know many of you are laughing, he is a special needs kid, not because of his birth but because his father passed on the family mental illness.... sometimes I used to joke to myself that my son counts as more than one kid in that case. But enough grouching, he is the light of my life and I wouldn't have traded him for anything. I love your blog and will be standing in line for the book when it comes. And congratulations on the vacation!

I'm supposed to have jaw surgery. There are two kinds, an outpatient and a three day hospital stay. I'm actually rooting for the three day stay. I'm looking forward to it being a kind of vacation. Isn't that sick?

A Woman after my own heart! I had my wisdom teeth out, not because they really bothered me, but just so I could get a couple of days of lying in bed, eating ice cream, watching lifetime, and most importantly....A KID FREE WEEKEND! What us moms will do for a little quiet time!

All moments remembered said...

OHHH I am so sorry your tooth hurts! I hate hate hate going to the dentist! Good luck with that!

I finally took myself to ER today with kids in tow. I have been sick all week with a fever and sore throat. I thought well the kids had it so now it is my turn. Mine seem to be getting worse. I have a rare form of strep throat and I have no tonsils. The ER said I was one heck of a woman walking around and taking care of kids as sick as I really am. I almost kissed him but he did mention I was highly contagious. I did get to lay down there while a sweet nurse got the kids to go color at her desk. So I started that new day job at the kids school to help with our income and I made it 3 days then called in sick for one week and now the DR wants me to call in sick for the next 2 days! I think God meant for me to always be a stay at home mom. Once my store takes off I will be home to just run it and no more of this being around a million little ones with HUGE germs!!
I hope you pick me soon for a review!! Oh and thanks for introducing me to Mimi! She and I have been emailing and she is one fantastic lady!!
Hugs,
Stacey

Ow! Your poor tooth - I hope you feel better soon. I hear ya about the marker thing. When my youngest was about 2 I fell asleep (I have CFS) while she was watching a movie. I woke up 2hrs later and found permanent Sharpie marker on her tummy... on the wall.. ok - that I can deal with. Then... scribbled all over the living room furniture!!! I burst into tears and called my friend who has 6 boys for support. I laugh now - certainly wasn't then.

A root Canal? That's the price you're willing to pay for a chance to get away from it all? Next time I recommend checking into motel without a forwarding number.

P.S. I have a crown. I guess that means I'm a princess too.

I went through the same thing with the tooth over a year ago. The old filling broke half the tooth off and I had a crown put on. A day or two later I had the worst pain ever. Lying down made it even worse. It had something to do with the nerve dying off, and once it did, no more pain.

Anonymous said...

Oh, tooth pain is unbearable. I hope that you get it resolved in a hurry. Here's to hoping that you get an hour alone in the dentists chair soon.

You seem to be such a positive mom. I would have to be hospitalized if my days were anything close to yours.

Thanks for the laughs and perspective.

Been there, done that with the root canal and a crown. I also have one large filling on another tooth that SHOULD have a crown but I had already met my max for our insurance. I had NO cavities as a kid and both of my kids are adopted but I have the same issues with my teeth that you do. My dentist said that if you have great teeth as a kid, your chances go up by 75% that you will have to have work done as you get older because as your teeth age, they have nothing to hold on to (aka fillings). So, who knows what the truth is. All I can say is I feel for you!

I had to laugh at the picture with the green marker all over the kid's arm, because my last blog post was about how my five year-old daughter colored her entire face with red marker. She told me it was "crazy face day." What the heck is it with the markers?

There IS another way you get to do that, one that is VERY important. It's donating platelets! You not only get to lay there for an hour and a half or so in peace and quiet, you get to watch a movie! And afterwards you get the juice of your choice AND a cookie! But most important you are helping so very many who depend on those platelets to survive! I used to donate every two weeks (which is how often you can) but I've been rejected for having Hepatitis B ANTIBODIES in my blood. How can having antibodies be a bad thing? It's so frustrating that I can't donate anymore! Anyone who's reading this PLEASE consider donating on a regular basis! Lives truly are at stake here!

Dawn said...

Lynn, that's true about donating platelets! In fact, for many years, I donated every month. When I was pregnant with my sixth baby, I discovered that I have a clotting disorder (had to give myself shots of blood thinners in the stomach twice a day for my whole pregnancy)so I can no longer donate which is unfortunate because I have super clotting platelets! :(

I feel the EXACT same way about my dentist. I have HORRIFIC teeth thanks to my dad, who gave me his teeth, and the wide spread bacteria in his mouth. But my dentist and my oral surgeon have never seen anyone so exited about getting their teeth worked on. I call my visits "spa days" No pain, no kids, everyone around is catering to MY wishes and comforts, I am breathing Nitro (which means I am HAPPY), and there is not a care in the world! I love it!!

Anonymous said...

Thank you for you blog which always makes me smile, however today I am a bit concerned. I have been looking forward to having my own children one day, but I have to say that if a trip to the dentist is actually a 'good' thing when you have children then I might have to re-think my intentions!

If you're a princess for one crown I'm am certainly nothing less than a queen...maybe even an empress (is that how you spell that??)!! Anyhow, I hope you take stock in Mr. Clean Magic Erasers (or the generic brands) because that will get that marker off...even the Sharpie...it works on skin too but it leaves a horrible rash so I don't suggest it!! JK!!

Glad I'm not the only one who enjoys the peace and quiet at the dentist. Last time I went in for fillings they skipped the anasthetic and I still managed to fall asleep. Bliss. Must book myself in for another check up soonish, I need a good nap

Dawn I have 3 children and didn't have epidurals for any of them. With numbers 2 and 3 I didn't have time I barely made it to the hospital in time (used to wonder how women could have babies in cars, car parks, taxis.......not any more! )

The blood bank don't want my blood either..and I used to donate every 3 months..sigh...auto-immune disease and also been diagnosed with a genetic blood clotting disorder (Factor 5 Leiden) I was born with this for goodness sakes and I find out at the age of 59???

Oh I must be a princess too and boy do I know the feeling of looking forward to a couple of days in hospital to have a break!!!.....

Dawn,
If one crown makes you a princess, and I have 4, what does that make me? (I also have 4 children. Coincedence? Perhaps not.)
I'm sorry to hear about your tooth. There's nothing worse than tooth pain! Every time I get a sinus infection, I get a terrible toothache.
Earlier this year, I broke a tooth eating ice cream (o.k. it had nuts in it) I went to the dentist, who told me my tooth had an abcess into my sinus cavity. Weird part was that I was in no pain.
Love the green marker artwork. Did you know that on the Crayola website, they have a section on stain removal. You can choose the surface and the type of product used, and it will tell you how to remove it. If the marker was permanent, maybe you could incorporate it into her Halloween costume.
I went to the Dr. a few years ago, found out I had strep throat, and he said "Is there someone who can come and help you with your kids so you can get some rest for a few days?" After ROTFL I asked "Could you write me a prescription for that?"
Hope you get feeling better!
Jill

I have never left a comment on your blog before, but have been reading for awhile.

I had to leave a comment today though. I too had unmedicated births, one at home. I love it when people understand why it is hard to rate your pain on a 1-10 pain scale, that is an impossible question to ask someone that has had natural childbirth!

With that said, I am SO SORRY about your tooth, and the fact that you just finished paying off the original root canal....YUCK, I swear, if it's not the kidlets or the hubby, it's us or the fridge, or the cars, it's the bills!

Good luck and get better soon

Ah, graffiti! My son was notorious for drawing on walls in not-so-obscure places. He even drew on his carpet, but I couldn't get too mad over that one; since both my kids were world-renowned nose-bleeders, the blue ink was an improvement. I knew it was his handiwork because, bless his innocent little self-incriminating heart, he always signed his scribbles. He finally got it out of his system when I redecorated the room and let him and his sister, and all their friends, draw on the walls and ceiling before the room was painted.

I had to go to the dentist shortly after having #5 with HUGE pain. He said how long has it been hurting? I said about a year. And i wasnt kidding. WHo has dental ins? Not me. I had to have a root canal and crown too. Good to know I am now a princess like you. Only $1200. YEA He said it was the worst infected root he had ever seen, including dental school. Makes you feel all tingly inside, doesnt it??

BTW I still have a toddler lock on my pantry and my youngest is 5. I think they like to play in there. I have no idea how long it will be on there, but I am glad it is!!

Oh no! Am so sorry to hear of your tooth woes dear heart. It is awful!!! I will tell you a tip though and it does really work. Get Aleeve gel caps (yes they have to be gel caps) take 2. Then get baby asprin and chew 2 of those up. Make sure you grind em down into the tooth that is killing you. I promise this will work wonders!! You can then make it through the night until you can get in and make a down payment on the dentists new home.

I thought you couldn't donate blood or platelets while pregnant or nursing? Do you mean that I'm wrong and I could have been indulging in a little quiet time (with juice and cookie, of course) for the past 16 years? Darn.

Yeah, I'd rather give birth than go through a bad tooth episode again. I have 3 crowns, so I outrank you.

6 months after giving birth to my son one of my wisdom teeth broke in half...really nasty stuff started getting into that thing, let me tell ya. So, I had it pulled.
6 months after giving birth to my daughter the same exact thing happened to the wisdom tooth on the other side. So, that one got pulled, too...along with a big piece of bone that was attached. Ouch.
Hope you feel better soon. And I give you huge props for having 6 babies without an epidural. Simply amazing.

Harold and his darn purple crayon (anyone remember that book?) visited our house when my oldest (now five) was a little bitty thing. And when my middle child (now three) was a little bitty thing, he managed to find every lost ball point pen, marker, crayon, etc known to man. And he colored several doors, the floors, just about every cupboard, the high chair a few times, his closet doors, several walls, the tables multiple times (this wasn't all at once and I SWEAR I'd do a check for all said writing untensils before daring to turn my back for two seconds, but he'd somehow get ahold of them anyway). So far, my baby (almost 16 months old) hasn't done anything more than make a meal out of an orange crayon he came across. ha!

So, now you're supporting the dentist's summer home AND funding the new wing at the library? LOL!

Magic Markers! They really are magical. My kids colored their arms, faces, legs, walls, dogs, an old couch...not all at once. They kept me guessing as to when they'd get the wild hair to do some artwork!

I'm on the same page as the platelets. A few times a year our schools have blood drives. I get to have a relaxing hour or so lying (or is it laying--never got that one right), read a book and save a life. To make it even better, they offer free babysitting and I get juice and cookies. I always go for the Lorna Doones. If you happen to pass out or get lightheaded while doing it--even better, then they have to monitor your vitals for another hour or so. Where else can you save and life and have your kids watched for FREE!!!

Umm Swelling is bad, probably means you have an abcess. Had one, totally sucked. They couldn't even put my crown on, had to leave it open and on abx for 6 weeks, seriously.

I hope yours isn't that bad. Go to the dentist Monday, promise promise.

My dentist told me they were doing lots of research to find out why pregnant women get cavities. I told him I hope they weren't spending a lot of money on that research because I could tell them why. After you puke your guts out for five months (vomit is not good for teet), then continue gagging every time you put the toothbrush in your mouth for the next four months, you get cavities.

My sister is 2 years younger than I and when she was 1, I kept hearing my Mom complain to her friends that my sister still didn't have any hair. So what did I do as the always helpful big sister?? I have three kiddos, myself (the baby is 4 months old) and I'm already looking to 2 years in the future when I'll be in the hospital again, having another baby. I think I'll stay 2 or 3 days that time. Just to sleep and only have to deal with ONE child. That would be so neat. I can hardly remember what it's like...

Ouch, teeth can hurt, and yes I agree kids cause bad teeth LOL. Since starting my brood I have had 4 root canals, 2 apecoectomies (yet it hurts as much as you might think), and finally had an abscess pulled a few months back along with countless cavities. They don't tell you that in health class!

The green goblin loves our house as well, but he always brings friends.

There must be something in the air. I know of at least two bloggers out there besides myself who have recently reported this same thing. My toddler son called his artwork with a jumbo, black Sharpie "Tattoos". I'm a little scared.

What I don't get is why, with buckets of felt pens in over 100 colors and numerous scents, sitting within reach...why is it always the one PERMANENT marker that he manages to find and draw all over himself with?

BTW, it took 3 baths with 'scrubbing' to finally soak that off his skin.

Dawn,

I am concerned about your tooth. You said it was swelled up and looked like nuts were being packed in there. If you are refering to your face being swollen, please see a Dentist or ER IMMEDIATELY. My sister had this a few years ago and it was an abcess tooth and she had to stay in the hospital for about 3 days before the swelling went away. I really hope that is not what this is and it is just tooth pain that can be fixed by the dentist, but please if your face is very swollen, run to the ER. My sister was told an abcess can go to the brain and kill you and without being able to see you, I can't tell you if you look the same as she did when she had hers. I hope you are alright and get relief for your tooth. Hugs on your tooth and the markers lol gotta love the kids. Lori - LCampbell79@sbcglobal.net

I marvel at how your life and mine parallel each other. Well, sort of. We do have the same vomit issues, but you have six children and I *only have four. I did give birth to all four without epidurals though! We both have great art lovers in our families. Let's see, you write...and, um, I wish I could. :o) You are dealing with tooth issues; I just had to have a chipped tooth fixed.

But for all our similarities, I've just found the biggest difference between us. You have a positive outlook when it comes to going to your dentist. I have an unnatural fear of mine. You see, the two visits before this latest trip were both immediantly followed by surprise pregnancies. I think it has something to do with the X-ray equipment in his office. I didn't have any x-rays this most recent time, but I'm still crossing my fingers and waiting on my period to start.

OK, have you tried the Color Wonder markers that only color on special paper and don't turn your child into a water color painting? I have found them to be a great replacement for my son that likes to create his own skin art everytime he finds a marker. Guess I'm going to have to worry about tattoos, huh?

Second, I too, delivered both children with no meds. When they did the scale of 1-10 pain deal with my first I said a 4 and was complete. It takes a lot to shock a LD nurse, but I did. However, I let an ear infection go for so long that it threatened to rupture my ear drum on a camping trip. At 1 am, I woke up to undescribable pain and told the ER doc that my pain was a 9. My husband freaked out and relayed the birth pain story. Turns out that not only was my ear drum infected, it was the most destended the Dr had ever seen without it rupturing. I'll never let one of the kids suffer through an ear ache again.

BTW, is it bad that when I came down with a bad chest cold a few days ago, I was laying awake, wishing that it was pneumonia so I could have a little hospital vacation to recover? : )

Well the blue meanies showed up at my house the other day... that was my 17 month old. As for my almost 10 year old, 2 years ago when we moved into this house, I was carrying a lamp and noticed something odd on the shade. Written up the side of the lamp shade was, "I want a water bottle!" Just the week before the move she was angry at me because I wouldn't give her the water bottle I had. Who would have thought a highly intelligent 8 year old woudl write on a lamp shade? For pete's sake, like I couldn't figure out it was her!!!

As for the "mini vacation" when my oldest two were 6 months and 2 years, I came down with a horrible kidney infection. I had to be hospitalized... for FOUR days! We were living in a new town with no friends and no family and my husband traveled 3 days a week. It was awesome! My parents came to take care of the kids! It was also during the worst flu outbreak the area had seen in years, so I got put in the pediatric unit since I wasn't contagious. I had a vcr, unlimited videos (even non-kid videos), a Nintendo, and a free electric dual breast pump to send home breastmilk for the baby! Talk about a break! I even asked to stay an extra day!

so sorry about your teeth woes, I really do not like going to the dentist, I am kind of afraid of the whole ordeal.

I actually looked forward to my last c-section because it meant I could stay in the hospital for 3 or 4 days and actually rest after major abdominal surgery. I also really enjoyed the long flight to Ireland, without the kids. A book and my ipod and I was really finer than fine.

no epidurals, wow- I salute you with my diet coke, lol!

I guess there are others out there like us who get all the teeth problems as adults! That certainly describes me too. I will receive my first crown next month...must be my reward for bringing my little princess into the world back in January ;o)
