This is How I Blow Bubbles

Oooo and check out what I wrote on the BlogHer site HERE and take a minute to share your favorite "feel good" meal idea for a chance to win $100 grocery gift card from Kraft! Who couldn't use 100 bucks for groceries?

The contest for the diaper bag is still going on over at my review blog HERE.

And lastly, have you guys heard about another crib recall by Simplicity/Graco? Over 1 million Simplicity and Graco brand bassinet/co-sleepers have been recalled after 2 babies died because of defectively designed frame rails.

Cara Smith, Deputy Chief of Staff for the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, has asked for volunteers to help get these cribs out of homes, and off the second-hand market.

"The challenge we have is trying to reach those parents who have these bassinets in their homes or those people selling them on the second hand market. We’re looking to form a group of volunteers who could help us in this project by visiting their local second hand store, thrift shop or garage sales and let us know if they see these recalled bassinets for sale. If so (or if they think it may be recalled) we have a toll-free number they or the store owner could call and we’ll take it from there."

Here's what these cribs look like. If you have one, or know someone who does, call the toll free number 1-888-414-7678.

  1. I love the unique bubble blowing!! Can Clay come live with me??? I need some excitement in my life!I still go back and watch him scale the refrigerator and laff and laff and laff!!

  2. You're so funny! I think it's hysterical that you let him take two tastes before suggesting that it probably doesn't taste good and that it's probably not a good idea to put any more of it in his mouth. You gotta give him props for sticktoitiveness (is that how you spell it?) though; he was gonna keep at it until he blew a good bubble!

  3. HAhahaha!!! Clay was looking all serious, that was so funny.
OMG, i just love Brooklyn, she said "thanks mom". What a good girl!

  4. I love how serious Clay's expression is while he does that. :P

  5. Oh my goodness- they are adorable!!!! How could you ever discipline them? I would just look at them and melt. My kids used to always put their mouths right on the blowstick and I thought that was disgusting. This beats that and it is much more funny! I think my favorite part is when Brooklyn says "Thanks, Mom". It just makes my heart smile. Thanks for a bright start to my day.

  6. I saw this last month on the CPSC's website, I check recalls.gov lots for recalls. The company that made these has since been bought out. The company that bought it refuses to recall the cribs even though they are killing babies! Needless to say, I will no longer buy those products. Thanks for making people aware!

  7. and for those of us with older kids- backyard soccer goals are killing kids too- lots were just recalled

  8. In the past few years, my eyes have been opened to the number of recalls our country has. www.cpsc.gov has a good website for checking recalls. You can search it for items you buy used. The greatest thing is their email lists that you can join to receive emails about recalled products. In the time my young ones were small, there were recalls on our carseat, highchair, playyard and on two of my son's toys (two days in a row). Most were partial recalls.

  10. Man, the kid must eat anything at dinner time! I am NOT showing that to my boys. Scary about the bassinet.

  11. All I can say to Clay is, so how does it taste? He actually doesn't seem to mind the soapy taste, does he???

  12. Wow, now that's a creative kid! And I must say that Brooklyn's bubble blowing expertise is pretty impressive, too.

Unfortunately, you do realize that Clay is just making it so that when he gets a bit older and swears like a sailor, the threat to wash his mouth out with soap won't be effective. That or he's just prewashing now in preparation for a particularly nasty potty mouth ;)

I love the swimsuit bottoms vs the pants and shirt. Totally a Chicago weather kind of juxtaposition.

  13. okay Dawn... what an adorable video of bubble blowing!!!. But I must admit, your voice saying "that's beautiful" in the last second was PRICELESS!... I'm still laughing!

Bubbles are the BEST as ANY age!
    Enjoy the day!

  15. Nice - thank goodness for flavored/scented bubble solution. *rolling eyes* - and thanks for the recall info, too - I passed it along to new parents I know.

  16. I have never seen anyone blow bubbles like that before...hilarious!

  17. Uck, I can almost taste the soap. :) The other day I saw bubbles that are edible. I guess many moms have had kids try to taste them.

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw the bubble blowing video was a scene from "A Christmas Story." Remember when Ralphie's mom punished him for saying bad words by sticking a bar of Lava soap in his mouth? And remember where he imagines he returns home, blind, and his parents are so sad and upset by the way they treated him. They ask him what happened and he replies, "Soap poisoning!" LOL

I hope Clay doesn't go blind.

  18. I guess you'll never be able to threaten him with washing his mouth out with soap-he'd just be forever blowing bubbles!

  19. OMG! I just sold my bassinet like that at my garage sale earlier this summer. I never used it as the co-sleeper though. I wish I knew the lady who bought it, because I would totally give her money back. She was going to give it away as a gift too. Oh man, now I have to try to figure out what to do.

  20. Too funny! Clay actually swallows the bubbles the second time around... watch closely. :)
Just emailed that recall out to everyone I know...thanks for the heads up!!

  21. I don't understand how those bassinets ever got on the market! I mean, there are already rules about crib rails not having too large a gap between them; don't you think the manufacturer would have kept that in mind when designing that bed, with that obviously deadly gap on the side? This really upsets me!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Just another reason to co-sleep until the kids are big enough for their own twin sized bed.

I have had several cribs given to me. I always give them away- they are a large area to collect clean laundry that needs to be sorted/folder, but the babies were never in them. :)

  23. I was thinking the same thing as SuburbanCorrespondent about the crib rails. How did they not notice that??

  24. I just read your "Breakfast for Dinner" post, and I have a question for you, since you get the yucky job of frying enough greasy bacon to feed all six kids. Have you not heard about doing bacon in the microwave? I know, it sounds gross and / or like cheating, but if you sandwich alternate-facing layers of bacon in between layers of paper towels on a plate, and nuke for about 7-ish minutes, you get perfect bacon with NO CLEAN UP! You can do it for longer if you like crispy rather than chewy. I was totally skeptical when my husband read about this in "The Best Recipe" or whichever cookbook he got it from, but it keeps the bacon smell out of the kitchen, you don't burn yourself on wayward grease, and, most importantly for me, you can do something else at the same time! Win-win in my book. I haven't used a frying pan for bacon in years.

  25. After that video, I'm convinced...Caden and Clay are the true twins. Are you sure you didn't have him in an Iowa Hospital? I could SO see Caden doing that!!! He hasn't- YET. He and Clay would have a ball together- maybe it's a good thing we DON'T live in the same state!
And look at that sweet little Brooklyn. She is such an angel sitting there. If Coleman would have been watching Clay, he would have had that look on his face like, "are you for real????" She just glances at him and goes about her business.
    Loved the video Dawn!

  26. How did Clay learn how to do that? - you asked. It might have been after the last time you washed his mouth out with soap. Well, at least that's how I learned to do it.

  27. I love how you let Clay drink practically half of the bubbles before telling him not to- its such a typical thing for me to do! I'm a nanny to two lovely girls, and soemtimes I get so caught up in watching them do cute/funny things that it only occurs to me after a while that hey this could actually be bad for them and I shouldn't be letting them do it so I tell them not to. Of course, typical Miss Ella (age 6) response to that is "But you were letting me do it just a second ago! Why can't I do it now?" You have to admit she has a point.

Your kids are cutie pies. I'd offer to babysit if I didn't live on the other side of the planet. If you are ever in Australia let me know- I look after 8 under the age of 7 every wednesday night, so I've had lots of practice at multiple kids ;)

  28. Look at Brooklyn pumping those bubbles like its her job! SHe's on a mission!

  29. The simplicity aspen 4 in one and 3 in one also have been recalled. I had 2 of them for my 2 boys. Had to return them last night and got a new toddler bed and crib. I never had any problems with the cribs but didn't want to take that chance with my boys lives.

  30. Remind Clay, "that takes talent, don't let anybody tell you different." HA HA HA. Thanks for a good laugh today! Blessings, Whitney

  32. Hey Dawn, haven't been able to check the blog! Down here in Houston, still dealing w/ the aftermath of Ike. Didn't even know of the flooding near you, and will keep you in my thoughts & prayers. We've been 6 days without power, although we've got water, gas stove & hot water heater, so we are a-ok. If you could please let your readers know that Houston & surrounding areas are still suffering.... The SPCA here sustained major damage, and is continuing on with its rescues. The SPCA, Houston division, or the Red Cross would be excellent places to donate.

Kindest Regards & hope all is well with you! Jennifer W., writing in the dark at work w/ no A/C, generators fueling the computers! I'll have a lot of catching up to do when my power comes on!

  33. Very creative!!! That being said, I hope my kids don't try using that type of "creativity" because I know it would them involve also actually drinking a lot of the bubble liquid!

I camped alot...in my younger years.....and the cardinal rule was to rinse your plates well!! Or you would end up with diaherra!! I cringed to see you taping this and then at the end you said that might not be a good idea..............xoxoxoox Kathy McKinney....not anonymous because I'm afraid.....but I don't *belong*

  35. Hi Dawn, I'm currently looking into food intolerances as a cause of my son's behaviour. I'm going to check out your comments about the diet you're using, but I thought I'd post you a link to an interesting website:

    http://www.fedupwithfoodadditives.info

I've read the first edition of her book, but it was a while ago. I'm going to get the new one. The tricky part is that it may be natural food causing the trouble: salicylates!
