Why is the Fish Green?

My husband cooked dinner tonight. He put some white fish fillets on a baking sheet. He looked around for something to use as seasoning. After perusing the spice jars and the shelves in the refrigerator, the best idea he came up with was lemon-lime Kool Aid.
Yep, he poured a packet of sugar-free lemon-lime Kool Aid on the fish and baked it.
I walked through the kitchen, as he took the tray out of the oven, and saw the neon green fillets.
"What the crap did you put on the fish???"
"It's a surprise."
"Seriously! What IS that???"
"Seasoning."
"Ummm, I have to run some errands right now. I'll be home after dinner."
I took my oldest daughter and we ran out the door went to the mall to exchange some clothes.
My husband called me shortly after we arrived at the store and said, "You were right. The fish was gross. We're eating pizza now."
In case anyone has ever wondered if lemon-lime Kool Aid would make a good subsitute for fresh lemon juice, the answer is a resounding NO.
I only wish I'd thought to take a picture of this culinary creation.

Sounds like something my dad or brother might try! Seriously is it a male thing to always have to put unusal combinations of food/drinks/spices in food? Although I can't complain...cause when they are cooking that means I have the night off of cooking and MOST of the time it doesn't taste too bad and it hasn't killed anyone ...yet;)

  2. So pickles weren't enough, now your family is putting Kool aid on other foods?
Maybe he just used the wrong flavor. Lemon lime would probably go better on trout. Maybe he should have used cherry, watermelon or kiwi strawberry.
We had fish tonight also. I wish I had thought of Kool aid. What flavor do you think would taste the best on salmon?
I think you should re-write that classic book by Dr. Seuss, as "Green eggs and fish"
"I will not eat green eggs and fish
I will not eat them on a dish.
You may eat them if you wish
But I think pizza is more delish"

    Think about it.

  4. Maybe you should start training the kids to cook...just in case you die of overwork. I have nightmares of my passing on and my children subsisting on hotdogs and pretzels. My husband is a wonderful man who often helps with the laundry, but his cooking skills lack a certain something.

  5. omg i died laughing when i read this. im surprised i didnt wake up the kids! Did He Really Think It Would Taste Good??? lol

  6. ROFL! I wish you'd snapped a picture, too. I've gotta say, I love your hubby. At least he cooks. Mine would starve to death, or eat only chips and candy, if I wasn't around to fix meals. Give him a hug from me and maybe a copy of this book. (I'd give one to my husband, but he doesn't know how to use the can opener!)

  8. What did I tell you? Hug your fish today because tomorrow he might become your dinner. I was right! Only, I had not predicted the line-green kolaid seasoning. But who could have seen that one coming?

  9. When my husband "cooks" I get asked 20 questions about how to open a can of soup. It drives me crazy. If I'm going end up with neon fish, I think I'll take the questions! Maybe he thought it would go with the kool-aid pickles.

  10. My husband cooked chicken one night and I can't remember what it was he put on it but it turned a bright neon pink and yes, it was very gross. I try to keep his "cooking" to a minimum. Barb

  11. Oh my! That reminds me of a time in college when my boyfriend (now hubby) and I were eating mac and cheese and m&m's were nearby. After snacking on those while we were eating, we decided that the salty and sweet tastes went together so well, we should actually mix some m&m's in... UGH. It looked gross (a nice shade of pukey gray) and it tasted worse. The funny thing is, this was a actually a sober college moment!

  12. Wow - that's a creative twist on fish I would have never dreamed of. But if he's looking for things to do with koolaid you could always tell him you can dye hair with it! And it smells good too!

  15. Thank you for making my day! I've just started teaching my husband how to cook (now that I'm 38 weeks pregnant, I figured it was about time). So far he hasn't done anything without me in the room with him... and after reading that, I'm glad!

  18. Dawn,
I thought I'd share my newest discovery - Crest White Strips.
It helps take my mind off the diet. While the (@#*^) scale won't budge, my teeth are getting whiter. They aren't cheap, about $30, but they are a lot cheaper then zoom at the dentist which is about $300. It's nice to see results somewhere. And hey, maybe my teeth will become so blinding white that no one will notice my butt.

  20. Did you scream at him for wasting a fish?

    ReplyDelete
  21. WOW I cannot believe you husband did that! I think he must be the source of all your kids creations like the pickles! or maybe there is just to much kool aid floating around.

    ReplyDelete
  22. ack.

My husband is not allowed to cook. Period. He takes artistic license with ingredients and directions.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hahahaha that's too funny! I can totally see my husband doing that! LOL

  24. Oh my GOSH, that's awesome!! I wish you had taken a picture too. I also wish you had tasted it, then we'd have the pleasure of reading exactly what it had tasted like. Although, I have tasted koolaid right out of the packet - there is definitely a REASON why they want you to add SIX CUPS of sugar (or whatever ungodly amount it is!)

    ReplyDelete
  25. ...........wow. I'm guessing he doesn't cook often.

  26. Sounds like something I would attempt. Mr. Hot? Is genius in the kitchen.

How often does your husband cook?

  27. Tell your husband for the future - orange juice. The juice of one orange (or about 1/4 cup) plus some season salt; broil. My wife doesn't like fish (unless it's deep-fried), but she liked it like that.

  28. That is insane!

  30. Dawn, LOL This is WAY TOO FUNNY! I wish my mom were still alive so I could share this recipe with her! My mom taught gourmet cooking for 27 years - she was an AWESOME cook. She would have gotten a good laugh from that one! On a lighter note, it might be possible to still use the kool aid, but maybe only a quarter teaspoon as a little sweetner... you might ask him to go back to the kitchen and test to see what happens when you use much less? I hope it was good pizza! And give that husband of yours a big hug for trying - its nice to have a husband that cooks too!!!! My husband loves to BBQ, but that is about it... so we eat BBQ all year around at this house - so I get some help with meals!
    Thanks for your great stories!

  31. Seriously...where do MEN come up with these ideas? It baffles me! *lol* Good story.

  32. Sounds like your husband and mine learned from the same chef! My dh made a concoction of ground chuck and who knows what else and put a can of green peas in it. I guess he stirred it so much the peas dissolved and turned everything green. Now I'm a very picky eater and couldn't bring myself to try it. The kids said it was good. Later they told me he paid them to say that! This from a man who ate stale frito sandwiches before we married. He won't cook for me anymore; I guess I crushed his spirit. He does take me out to eat occassionally though so all is well.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think he did it FOR the pizza --lol. I would never have thought of adding kool-aid to fish, at least not the lemon-lime kind.
    HILARIOUS! :-)

  35. My husband likes to experiment with eggs and omelettes on Sunday mornings. Once we had mint and potato omelettes. One time he planned to make plain scrambled eggs but instead of a little milk in the eggs, he grabbed the flavored coffee creamer. Nothing like vanilla hazlenut eggs to start your day right!

    ReplyDelete
  36. That is so seriously funny!

One time, I put cinnamon and crushed corn flakes on chicken. That didn't work out too well.

    ReplyDelete

  38. HAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

Although that was a waste of what I am sure would have been a good meal minus the kool-aid, I almost wish sometimes my husband was inept in the kitchen...he is the male version of Martha Stewart...I call him Stewart Martha...

Have you ever considered renting your hubby out to pump up women's self-esteem in the kitchen? What dates does he have open?

  40. This reminds me of when my husband decided make me some fresh 'banana cookies'. He worked all evening on them (he used a basic sugar cookie recipe and just kept adding things). At around 1:00 a.m. he woke me from a sound sleep to try his new creation. They were GROSS!!!! I love bananas a lot, and they taste great in bread - but they were never intended for a cookie :-0

  54. I recently read the following (it's not about me), and reading your post about neon green fish reminded me of it... I post it here for you and your readers' perusing pleasure:

"This happened several years ago. My husband had just started his business (lawn and landscape) that year, and winter was very slow. He was getting restless and bored during the day when I was at work, so he took up baking, and started bringing my coworkers and me cookies almost daily. One day, he decided to make meringue cookies, but I guess he couldn't find the whisk attachment for the mixer to use on the egg whites. I got home early that day, and found him whisking the egg whites with a whisk that he had duct-taped to his power drill.

I'm not kidding. It got the job done, though. Best meringue I ever
tasted!!! He'll never live that one down though. Gives a whole new meaning to the term redneck, doesn't it?!?!?!"

Though, he'd have probably tasted the Koolaid first. And if it was the sugar-free kind, was it sweetened at all? Because if not, OMG that super tart bitterness couldn't have been very good when he actually tasted the fish. LOL still..... toooo funny!!

  87. That was SOOO funny! And what a surprise it was!

Reminds me of my own little cooking debacle as a young teen. Lemon Chicken. Except that nobody told me lime doesn't substitute straight across for lemon. Everything looked perfect, but that chicken was SO sour, not even our cats and dog would touch it... and they ate anything.

On the other hand, reading about your family's gourmet delights may be the magic diet I have been looking for. I'm thinking .... no more fish for a while either.

  90. Too funny!!! Good thing the kids didn't eat it otherwise they would have had NEON poop. When my daughter was little she loved grape koolaid. She started having neon green poops. We finally discovered it was the dye in the grape koolaid. Needless to say, we quit giving it to her. My husband is generally a good cook, but he also likes to experiment. He made a dish one night that I would have thought was beef stronganoff, but when we tasted it, it had a very sweet, odd taste. YUCK!! He hasn't made that dish since. THANK GOODNESS!!

  100. Oh my - not only did your post crack me up, but it made me VERY grateful for my own husband. He's a SAHD - he cleans, does laundry, takes care of our littlest all day and picks the older two up from school, AND he cooks. Quite well, in fact. I may have to help him with ideas or how-to's now and then, but he would never put kool-aid on fish - at least, not without asking first!

  101. I love it! (Both the fish and your Vacation reference.) It just makes me laugh. And it sounds like what my son mixes on Webkinz to make gunk.

Then again, when I was in high school, my best friend and I would take ingredients and mix concoctions then cook them -- fortunately no meat or other main dish type ingredients. A couple turned out ok but mostly ... I think "gunk" does sum it up.

    Tee hee! I'm still laughing,

  103. Ok well, thank goodness my husband does all the cooking!! You know what I thought of when reading this? "It's going to be fine, she's going to realise it tasted good, it sounds like a great innovative idea to season with kool-aid, I wonder what I can season with Kool-aid" Then you revealed it really was gross, and I was surprised! lol. I'm just that kind of experimenter, it seems like a good idea till you taste it :)

My experimental fish story? Fish stir fry. I grilled up a bunch of fish, added veggies and rice and everything like a chinese stir fry. It actually tasted fanstastic, and I hate fish! lol. I have tried twice more to make the same dish, and i tell you, fish stir fry is sooo gross!! I have no idea what I did right that first time, I remember I was starving and on my own to even thaw the fish, but was I that starving that it tasted good too??
