Yep, he poured a packet of sugar-free lemon-lime Kool Aid on the fish and baked it.
I walked through the kitchen, as he took the tray out of the oven, and saw the neon green fillets.
"What the crap did you put on the fish???"
"It's a surprise."
"Seriously! What IS that???"

"Ummm, I have to run some errands right now. I'll be home after dinner."

In case anyone has ever wondered if lemon-lime Kool Aid would make a good subsitute for fresh lemon juice, the answer is a resounding NO.

ReplyDeleteSounds like something my dad or brother might try! Seriously is it a male thing to always have to put unusal combinations of food/drinks/spices in food? Although I can't complain...cause when they are cooking that means I have the night off of cooking and MOST of the time it doesn't taste too bad and it hasn't killed anyone ...yet;)

Maybe you should start training the kids to cook...just in case you die of overwork. I have nightmares of my passing on and my children subsisting on hotdogs and pretzels. My husband is a wonderful man who often helps with the laundry, but his cooking skills lack a certain something.

After snacking on those while we were eating, we decided that the salty and sweet tastes went together so well, we should actually mix some m&m's in... UGH. It helps take my mind off the diet. While the (@#*^) scale won't budge, my teeth are getting whiter. They aren't cheap, about $30, but they are a lot cheaper then zoom at the dentist which is about $300. It's nice to see results somewhere. And hey, maybe my teeth will become so blinding white that no one will notice my butt.

Tell your husband for the future - orange juice. The juice of one orange (or about 1/4 cup) plus some season salt; broil. My wife doesn't like fish (unless it's deep-fried), but she liked it like that.

ReplyDeleteDawn, LOL This is WAY TOO FUNNY! I wish my mom were still alive so I could share this recipe with her! My mom taught gourmet cooking for 27 years - she was an AWESOME cook. She would have gotten a good laugh from that one! On a lighter note, it might be possible to still use the kool aid, but maybe only a quarter teaspoon as a little sweetner... you might ask him to go back to the kitchen and test to see what happens when you use much less? I hope it was good pizza! And give that husband of yours a big hug for trying - its nice to have a husband that cooks too!!!! My husband loves to BBQ, but that is about it... so we eat BBQ all year around at this house - so I get some help with meals!

ReplyDeleteSounds like your husband and mine learned from the same chef! My dh made a concoction of ground chuck and who knows what else and put a can of green peas in it. I guess he stirred it so much the peas dissolved and turned everything green. Now I'm a very picky eater and couldn't bring myself to try it. The kids said it was good. Later they told me he paid them to say that! This from a man who ate stale frito sandwiches before we married. He won't cook for me anymore; I guess I crushed his spirit. He does take me out to eat occassionally though so all is well.

ReplyDeleteMy husband likes to experiment with eggs and omelettes on Sunday mornings. Once we had mint and potato omelettes. One time he planned to make plain scrambled eggs but instead of a little milk in the eggs, he grabbed the flavored coffee creamer. Nothing like vanilla hazlenut eggs to start your day right!

At around 1:00 a.m. he woke me from a sound sleep to try his new creation. They were GROSS!!!! I love bananas a lot, and they taste great in bread - but they were never intended for a cookie :-0

ReplyDeleteLOL, I'm not the best cook but a fool proof way of cooking fish that works for me is: Brush fish with oil; sprinkle on salt, pepper and garlic powder; then bake. Tastes great and uses only things I always have on hand!

I remember when the dishwashing liquid Sunlight came out and the manufacturers mailed sample packets to consumers. The packet labels said something about "lemon", and people started complaining because their samples of this new salad dressing tasted like soap.

ReplyDeleteReminds me of my own little cooking debacle as a young teen. Lemon Chicken. Except that nobody told me lime doesn't substitute straight across for lemon. Everything looked perfect, but that chicken was SO sour, not even our cats and dog would touch it... and they ate anything.

Too funny!!! Good thing the kids didn't eat it otherwise they would have had NEON poop. When my daughter was little she loved grape koolaid. She started having neon green poops. We finally discovered it was the dye in the grape koolaid. Needless to say, we quit giving it to her. My husband is generally a good cook, but he also likes to experiment. He made a dish one night that I would have thought was beef stronganoff, but when we tasted it, it had a very sweet, odd taste. YUCK!! He hasn't made that dish since. THANK GOODNESS!!

Oh my - not only did your post crack me up, but it made me VERY grateful for my own husband. He's a SAHD - he cleans, does laundry, takes care of our littlest all day and picks the older two up from school, AND he cooks. Quite well, in fact. I may have to help him with ideas or how-to's now and then, but he would never put kool-aid on fish - at least, not without asking first!

ReplyDeleteMy experimental fish story? Fish stir fry. I grilled up a bunch of fish, added veggies and rice and everything like a chinese stir fry. It actually tasted fanstastic, and I hate fish! lol. I have tried twice more to make the same dish, and i tell you, fish stir fry is sooo gross!! I have no idea what I did right that first time, I remember I was starving and on my own to even thaw the fish, but was I that starving that it tasted good too??
I'd be looking around waiting on the Kool-Aid pitcher guy to burst through the wall and say "oh YEAH", then take one look & run!

A few weeks ago, he wanted sweet and sour chicken. We had no chicken, however. His solution? Batter and fry baby carrots! Yum!
