Spring Break

So, it's spring break here. Anyone with kids knows what a double-edged sword that is. On the one hand, you don't need to deal with homework, getting up early, running to after-school activities, and yogurt spilled in backpacks. On the other hand, your kids are home 24/7. With you. All day long. For eleven days. Yeah.

On Saturday, we eased into spring break mode by sleeping half the day, then watching movies and eating garbage the other half. I'm pretty sure it's acceptable to have chili cheese dip and tortilla chips for dinner on spring break. We watched Ponyo for the 58th time, The Princess and the Frog (loved it lots!), Where the Wild Things Are (hated it!), and The Time Traveler's Wife. I really liked that one, but time travel movies always confuse me. I feel like I need to make a diagram so I can follow the messed-up timeline.

Because we had successfully messed up our sleeping schedule, we all overslept and missed church on Sunday. Oops.

Today, the kids played outside most of the day. It's downright tropical here at fifty degrees and we're enjoying every bit of mud from the melting snow sunshine. I love cleaning my floor and the muddy footprints are just precious reminders that I have a houseful of love. And honestly, I didn't even notice the clogged and overflowing toilet. I carefully stepped over the huge pile of papers and toys on the floor as if they weren't even there. The food stains on the couch are hardly even visible in the dark and the extra 500,000 dirty dishes every day is nothing at all. I love that my kids are home all week! Now excuse me while I pour myself a glass of wine and curl up in a fetal position.

  3. Now I remember that I don't feel bad that we don't have spring break here in Wisconsin. Well, I'm sad that I don't have one as a teacher, but not so much that my kids don't have one... Thanks for the reminder :-)

  4. lucky you. our spring break is next week and since I'm currently out of work, it will be family time for every day but the 2 days my husband works. I only have 2 and I feel the same way about it you do. not sure what I'm going to do with the kids the days my husband works. hopefully it will stay warmish (we are in north/northwest IL) and sunny and they can bounce their hearts out on the trampoline.
good luck getting through the week!

  7. Isn't this where your mantra becomes, "They're only this young once." I'm told that as your children approach adulthood, you'll be asking yourself, "Where did the time go?"

  8. LOL...precious reminders that I have a houseful of love!!!! I was home with my precious angels (not) last week. They get two weeks out but unfortunately (not) I had to work the first week. The best two days were the two that the weather turned nice and they could go outside to play :)

  9. Look on the bright side -- it can always be worse. I will be 38 weeks pregnant when Spring Break hits our house!! Praying this baby comes so I can escape to the hospital and not worry about getting kids to and from school in the midst of it all.

  10. How is Spring Break eleven days? My poor head just can't add the numbers. This of course from the homeschooling mom with seven children. I know all about 24/7 with the children!

  11. Hmm...a tosser is actually not a very nice word- at least not in the UK.
Its a derogative description of someone and usually accompanied by an up and down hand motion (think about it !!!)

  12. Ha ha. We have 2 more weeks before we get to experience Spring Break.

We also watched Where the Wild Things Are and hated it...especially the ending. My kids said the whole thing was "so random!" and very unsatisfying at the end.

  13. Spring Break is next week over here. I am not looking forward to it. My kids fight horribly. Apparently if one LOOKS at the other funny, it's the end of the world.

I also was confused while watching The Time Travelers Wife. Then I read the book and it made a little more sense but I was still like, "Huh?"

  14. Yup! We love Princess and the Frog :D. I haven't watched Where the Wild Things Are yet, and have no desire whatsoever to do so. I can't watch something that's full of big fuzzy creatures that look like they are straight off of the "Party in My Tummy" song *Shudder*.

  18. I hope you do enjoy them some! I love having my kids home for Spring break. We get to do things during this week that most weeks due to school we can't do or complete. I just don't want to be at the wedding of one of my boys and be crying with regret.

  19. As a working parent, I love spring break - my kids get to sleep in a little later than usual, but then go off to fun adventures at 'camp' run by the afterschool program - trips to baseball games, rock climbing gyms, the circus... it's a win for everyone. Our spring break isn't for another month, though.

  20. Easter holidays don't start until this Thursday here. Then I look forward to 2 weeks of,
    "I'm Hungry."
    "I'm bored."
    "What can I do?"
"Can I go over to *add name here*'s place?"
"But everyone else is going to see the Miley Cirus Movie."
    My answers never change.
    "Vegemite sandwich."
    "Clean your room."
    "Not today, they're not home."
"Wait till next holidays and we can buy the DVD and you can watch it a hundred times for the same price as a movie ticket."

Thank the powers that be for the Butterfly exhibit on at the Museum, should be worth a couple of hours at least.
