Happy Easter!

HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!
As it happens with every holiday, someone got sick last night. Jackson went to bed with a fever and a sore throat. So, this morning, Joe took Austin to the sunrise service because the kids are responsible for doing that service at my church. When they returned, the kids searched for Easter eggs and then inhaled a year's worth of sugar in the span of 10 minutes. After that, Joe watched Austin and Jackson while I took the other kids to church. (Jackson seems to be totally fine today, btw.)
I teach 2nd and 3rd graders for Sunday school. Today, of course, the lesson was about how the stone was rolled away and Jesus was gone. I gave each child a triangle of crescent roll dough and a jelly bean. I told them the jelly bean represented Jesus and the dough represented the tomb. The kids had fun wrapping the jelly bean in the dough and sealing the sides all around it. I baked the rolls and when they were done, I served them to the kids and told them, "Open the rolls (tomb) and you'll see that the jelly bean (Jesus) is gone!"
OK, the jelly bean was supposed to melt. It was supposed to, but it didn't.
"Hey, Mrs. Meehan, Jesus is still in my roll."
"Jesus didn't melt!"
"Hey, I have 4 jelly beans in mine!" Oh great, not only did it not melt, but apparently it multiplied in one kid's roll.
"Can we eat Jesus?"
"I don't like jelly beans. Can I just eat the tomb?"
Note to self: try out any cooking experiments at home before doing them in Sunday school.
If you didn't win a digitally signed excerpt of my book last week, never fear. Here are a couple more ways to win your very own copy of Because I Said So!

Visit Guideposts for a chance to win a copy of my book (and other awesome prizes like a V-Tech V.Smile, leather diaper bag filled with Johnson's baby products, or a robe, slippers and nightgown set from Lands' End.)

And 75 of my books are being given away on The Book Club Cookbook HERE.

Check them out and good luck! :)

  1. Next year, try marshmallows for Jesus. They melt better than jelly beans. =)

  3. We did the crescent roll empty tomb this morning with our kids. Try using a marshmallow instead of a jelly bean. We also added sugar and cinnamon to be like the spices/perfume poured over Jesus before the crucifixion. It made it very yummy. Happy Easter.

  4. Happy Easter to you too! The fever and sore throat went through the house here too. It was an odd one though. Each of us only had it for two days.

  8. LOL so sorry about your Sunday school lesson but that was hilarious! :) I needed that, thanks for sharing.

Also, I just wanted to let you know that I tried to follow the Guideposts link and it appears to be broken as it says "page not found".

Hope you had a wonderfully blessed Easter otherwise. You never cease to make me smile!

  9. I am Jewish, but I hear that putting a marshmallow inside the roll works better. :)

  10. "Hey, Mrs. Meehan, Jesus is still in my roll."

That is priceless. I have never heard of that little craft before, but thank you. You made my night.

  11. Hi, question here for SSO... (all the way from the Netherlands). I just finished and LOVED your book- well done... But... Did I read correctly and do you have a dog as well, besides 6 kids? I read about dogfood and such and was just wondering... (btw- I have 4 kids PLUS puppy- I must say the combination works out just great ;o)

OMG I laughed so hard. I have so been there with Sunday School crafts and kids. One year we had the kids trace and color thier bodies. One lil boy was all done laying down for his trace and had an outline of a dead body crime scene when he grabbed the pen from me and said "now I got to draw my pee-nee", and he drew, and drew, and drew, lots of lines for his pee-nee. I about DIED. It was with extreme blushed cheeks I explained the situation to the mom. She laughed and said shes used to it. Love reading you and am headed to Barnes & Noble tomorrow to grab your book! It's the first day back to normalacy!

  14. I want to enter to win and they won't let me because I'm British (more to the point, British and living in Britain). I'm going to very dramatically throw myself on the pillow in tears to see if I get my way. It works for kids so I thought I might have a chance.

  15. Yep, we did the same thing with the rolls and used marshmallows and the marshmallow did melt. You also have to make sure that they roll is sealed completely. We had one that wasn't sealed all the way and the marshmallow didn't melt. We also put some butter and cinnamon and sugar on the marshmallow to represent the spices they put on Jesus' body.

  17. Hahahahahaha Dawn, long time reader. You made me laugh out loud today. "Hey, Jesus is still here!" Now why didn't you say, "Because he is alive today and with us all!"? I know hind sight is 20/20...I still can't get up off the floor. You've made my day.

  18. I was trying to remember what the recipes I had seen suggested instead of the jelly bean. Looks like you got your answer already. LOL My 8yo would have been the one with 4 in there. It sounds like Easter may have been fairly calm at your house. I love it when that happens on a holiday!

  19. As others have said, use a marshmallow. You can wrap up a big marshmallow in the cresent roll, roll it in melted butter and then in a cinnamon sugar mixture. They are really yummy! I enjoyed reading your post...I'm still chuckling at all the things the kids said!

  20. LOL!
I thought kids getting sick was a requirement for vacation... Guess I forgot about holidays.

  21. Everyone's right-- Marshmallow for the resurrection roll!

  22. So glad to hear Brooklynn's not potty trained yet. My 3 1/2 year old little boy will ONLY poop in pull-ups. The child will blow up if he doesn't have one. We've tried threating/bribery/begging to no avail. Wonder how big they make "depends"!

  23. Hilarious! Those poor kids are going to be so confused about Easter from now on. Eggs? Jelly Beans? Easter? It all adds up!

  24. Oh my that had me rolling laughing! Sorry though. I got some email recipe called the Easter Story cookies and when you leave them in the oven overnight the inside becomes empty. Kind of the same thing. Maybe they would be more successful?!

  25. Glad everyone is healthy again. And please tell me that the whole fridge is new and I'm not just totally unobservant? Please?

And the jelly beans? I *love* it :) Of course our Sunday school was canceled the last two weeks for holidays. And I was at church for two services singing. I would NEVER make it as a minister. Never.

  30. I've heard teachers tell kids the leftover white residue from the marshmallow melting looks like the linen cloth left behind in the tomb! :)
