Leaving for L.A.

I really wanted the first post I wrote on my newly designed blog to be a good, funny one. But I'm not feeling funny today. Someone close to me has let me down again and I'm feeling stupid, fat and ugly. I'm tired. I'm tired of crying. I'm tired of being mad. I feel like I want to crawl into bed and just stay there. Do you ever have days like that? The past couple weeks, I've felt wonderful! I've felt good about myself, about life, just good. It took feeling really good, to realize just how lousy I had been feeling. I guess all good things must end though.

Anyway, I'm off to California tomorrow morning for Glamour Reel Moments styled by Suave. The timing couldn't be better. I'm really looking forward to getting away and enjoying myself for a couple days. I have 5 pairs of shoes packed and not one of them are Crocs! Impressed? Mom, Dad, if you read this, you might want to have the kids over for dinner one night. You know, to spare them from Kool-Aid fish or baking soda gravy. <---if you're a new reader, click that link and you'll know what I'm talking about.

I'll be back with the funny tomorrow, I promise. What better way is there to cope with life than humor, right? A good laugh can make pretty much anything better. :)

  1. Oh YES I have days like that. It is always nice to know I'm not the only one. I'm sure you've heard it a thousand times, but the new page design is really great and your family photo is beautiful.

  2. Oh, and I grew up in a family with 8 kids, so I always wanted a bunch of kids myself. However, our first child was so much more work than I expected that I started to think that maybe one was plenty. I know you might think that your stories would convince anyone that when it comes to kids, less is more. But I just wanted you to know that reading your blog reminded me why I Do want lots of kids. So thanks.

  4. I am so sorry, Dawn! I have so been there. Many days I still am... If you want a good laugh, just go back and read your own Thursday Thirteen!!

  5. oh Dawn... hope you're ok

thank you so much for always brightening up my day =)

  6. I am sorry to hear you had a bad time. Why is it when other people hurt us, we take it out on ourselves? The person you were counting on is the issue, not your weight or intelligence.
Hang in there, true friends always show themselves.

  7. Do I ever feel stupid, fat & ugly? Sure. Do I deserve that feeling? NO! Remember that other people can make you feel a certain way only because you let them - so, stop letting them! Just because someone close to you has an opinion, doesn't mean they're right. Enjoy yourself in CA and don't give being let down, crying and being mad a second thought. You've got better things to do with your time!

  8. Hi there!

Really clever new design! I love the fridge! Last year when you got your new design I was one of the shameful people who said I wasn't crazy about it--hate me. Sometimes I need to keep my big mouth shut.

In turn you told us who didn't like it to go get our own blogs in which I think I laughed out loud. And, then I did it.

Thank you for inspiring me and giving me the push I needed to start my own blog!

    Congrats on your success!

  9. I hope your trip brings back your smile. Yes, I have those days; sometimes because of my own problems and sometimes because I get hurt by others. They are not fun. I know you're not immune to it either but I am sad to hear it. You do bring so much joy to others or make us feel sain in an otherwise nutty world. Enjoy your trip and try to let it go; at least for now so you can have some fun. Feel better!

  11. Hi Dawn. I've been reading your blog/website for over a year, ever since my sister turned me on to your Pokemon cards ebay listing.

Every day I treat myself by reading your website. It's not because of your parenting skills (I have no children so parenting tips are lost on me). It's not because you're funny (although I have sometimes laughed so hard tears rolled down my face). And it's not because your website is currently the coolest thing around (I've never been a fad-follower).

It's because of your ability to communicate authentically. Your genuine concern for others comes through your writing.

Your words are welcome refreshment in these uncertain times.

Especially on the days when I've spiraled down into sadness and fear. Although I know I won't feel that way forever, it sure does seem like it at the time. Sometimes the only way to get through it is to just, well, get through it.

I hope you feel good about yourself, your life and your future soon.

There are a lot of us readers out here who may never meet you, but please know you've really made a big difference in our lives.

    Sandy in Tucson

  12. Dawn....I have been out of town for a few days and get back and what a great surprise to see your awesome new website! I love it.

I hope you have a fantastic time in California.

Don't let other people get you down...you literally have millions of people who think you are wonderful and you brighten their lives almost everyday when they click on your blog.

I hope you come close enough to my hometown so I can meet you in person on your book tour!

    Have a safe trip.

  13. Oh Dawn, I'm sorry someone let you down. I'm glad you are choosing to go forward. I hope you can forgive whoever it was, and realize maybe they were having a bad hair day and you just happened to be handy.

You are such a delightful person. I'm a bit like the other commenter--I read you because you have a powerful ability to describe life in the best light. My six children are grown with spouses and children of their own, but this Gramma loves reading your blog and I look forward to your book.

My warm thoughts and prayers are for your trip to be a delightfully refreshing experience.

  14. (((hugs))) to you! I know you don't know me from Adam (or Eve as the case may be) but I have been reading your blog since the Pokemon auction as well. You are a charmingly funny and loving person. I hope your sadness doesn't carry on into your California Trip. Please have a lot of fun and enjoy yourself!

On the new blog look... Who cares but you, right? It's your blog, make it look like you want. I was just a little scared at first, because it was so different. LOL! Glad I didn't lose you! Your writings and musings are a great part of my life!

    Cheers!

  15. Hi Dawn, I feel your pain!! Back when my kids started school one of my son's favorite teacher came up to me and put her hand on my belly and said CONGRATULATIONS!! I moved back and said, "oh I'm not pregnant, just fat". I also said, "if I was pregnant, it wouldn't be my husband's, cause we had that fixed 3 years ago"! I think I cried for 2 days straight. My youngest child will be 3 in a couple weeks and I just can't lose the weight in my belly. This happened back in September and I'm still not over it.
So, I know how you feel your sadness! Also, I love the new blog. IT's AWESOME!!
Thanks for always making me smile.

  16. Oh! I left without saying I do absolutely love the new look of your blog. The whole fridge idea and the magnets. Absolutely cute, cute, cute!

  21. Love the new look of your BLOG!!!

Especially the pics of the kids and Joe on the sidebar! Have a great time on your trip, and don't let those who let you down get you down. Whatever happened happened probably out of spite and jealousy on their part. And you know I'm probably right, after all, I am an advice columnist for Cripes' sake, I KNOW THESE THINGS! Bwhahahaahh!

Don't let ANYTHING upset you. Have a blast and we'll chat when you get back! Safe travels! Steph

Oh, and don't let anyone get you down about yourself. You're beautiful, smart and you are NOT fat! Don't put down on yourself you're too good for that girl.
Hope you are feeling better, have fun!

I'm sorry you have been hurt. I hope you are feeling better soon. We've all had days like that. They are so not fun.

Have a safe and fun trip!

  28. To DAWN (my honorary Baby Sister!!)
In a few more months, when BRINKS Armoured Trucks have to wait in line to drop off bags of bucks (payment for your BEST SELLING BOOKS)..this little incident which is making you feel LOUSY..will be quickly forgotten. Whomever it was who had the nerve to upset OUR favorite author and writer, will at some point ask for "just a little loan-gift-grant" Just think for a moment about what your response WILL be...
    How's that? Feeling better now?
To be serious for a moment, YOU just do NOT deserve ANYTHING to bring your special and delightful personality down. Except maybe ONE LITTLE THING: Who is PAYING for BANDWIDTH CHARGES on this terrific new website..Perhaps you should phone up your literary agent..who in turn should visit the publishers..and strongly SUGGEST that they pop open their purses!
Hoping you have a wonderful time out in California.

  29. Dawn, I'm sure you've heard this a million times already (even though there are only 26 comments up so far), but huge *hugs* to you. Bad days are no fun, but you are gorgeous -- I still love that second top, especially on you -- and you're definitely not stupid or fat. I know it isn't as easy as the words sound, but I do hope that you can find a way to let it all just roll off your back like water off a duck.

And have a GREAT time in LA. I hope you are able to completely recharge your batteries -- I can't wait to hear your recap and I definitely want to see some pics of all five pairs of shoes!

    Have a safe flight!

  30. You know you are loved! And we all know that you know you are loved! There is no denying it! You are an amazing woman! Give yourself a big pat on the back and move on! Don't sweat the small stuff...and it's all small stuff!

  31. Dear Dawn,

I am so sorry for the pain that you are experiencing because of someone else. Did you know that you reach thousands of Moms that need to read your hilarious stories to feel sane?? (Of coarse you do, but you need the reminder!)

    We love you!

Go and enjoy your time in California and don't give another thought to the events of today. Put it in the rearview mirror and don't look back.

  32. Sorry you're feeling down - it really sucks when someone close lets you down (again). And just for the record you are NOT stupid, NOT fat and NOT ugly. Quite the opposite, I think.

Have a great time away. I am so jealous of anyone who gets child-free time. I love my children but I do need a break sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh, I am so sorry somebody hurt you. Dawn, you are beautiful, shapely and brilliant, and don't forget that. We sometimes give other people too much power over our self-esteem, don't we?

I for one think you're amazing and I hope you have an amazing time ... how could you not? Selfishly, I am looking forward to reaping the reader reward of all the great blog fodder you'll be sure to come back with.

    Love the new site look!

  34. Oh Dawn, I have been there sweetie, right now for sure. It takes being so low to appreciate the highs. I knew last year was one of those good years and I appreciated every moment and was very thankful. Unfortunately, this is a hard year with my 4 kidlets. I love them so much and yet they can cause so much heartache and stress.

Have fun in California and let all the rest go.

  35. Long time reader, first time commenter. I know how you feel, it is really hard when someone lets you down. But just remember, you are raising six great kids, and you are almost universally loved by those who read you (and to hell with the ones who don't like you) and you are beautiful.

    Ok was that sappy enough.

Keep up the great work, and try not to let other people get you down.

  36. Yep, I guess we all have days like that. Personally, I've had a few weeks of it lately.
But whoever made you feel like that, here's a virtual kick in a place of your choice for that person. Compliments of me in the land known for clogs and wooden horses! Have a great time in LA!

  37. Hugs to you, Dawn. So many of us feel like you are a good friend to us. We would love to be there to provide a shoulder to lean on. May God lift your spirits and bring joy (as well the ability to forgive, if necessary in this situation) back to your heart.

    Have a wonderful, wonderful trip!

    Bev

PS -- I love the new site, too. I know you are so pleased with it.

  38. Dawn - you are a vibrant, intelligent, go getter and beautiful person AND woman. Anyone who tells you otherwise is just trying to bring you down to their sad state. You bring entertainment to thousands, you raise your kids well, and you haven't killed anyone! (Recently ;) .. You have a lot to be proud of and *&#! anyone who tells you different!

  39. You are stronger than you think. Look at this incident as one of God's little lessons. You are so blessed to be such a wonderful writer with incredible insight. Did I forget...awesome mom, AND inspiration for thousands of us to feel good about ourselves...that we are normal (well, can't speak for myself) and have so much in common.

Thank you for taking this journey.

    ReplyDelete
  40. First: I love the new design. My compliments to your web design team!

Secondly: Everyone has crappy days. It's normal.

Thirdly: Just because someone let you down doesn't mean you're fat, stupid, or ugly. Maybe they're the ones who are stupid (or fat, or ugly, or all of the above) for letting you down, hmmm?

Have a great time on your trip! Yeah, perfect timing when you want to get away from it all! Hope you have a great time. Can't think of anyone who deserves it more- oh and LOVE LOVE LOVE your new design!!!

  64. Hiya Dawn. I hope you're having a wonderful time in California (if you're still there). Anyway, as a quasi web designer, I had to take a good look at your new site - AWESOME! I love the pictures of your family!

There is only one little criticism. I took a screen snip of what I see to show you but I don't know how to get it to you. It may be a problem with IE7, it may be a problem with the code... either way its an easy fix. But, it's in the About Dawn section and honestly, it looks awful especially compared to the rest of your blog!

If you'd like me to email the picture to show you what I'm seeing, let me know, I'll be happy to do that.

AND I can't wait for your book!! I've had it preordered for ages and ages!

Thanks for sharing your special brand of humor with the internet world.

    ((hugs))

  65. By the way, I just checked Firefox and Google Chrome and they display it fine. The problem seems to be only in IE7. *sigh*
