Loopy in Minnesota

I've been without internet (the horror!) for a couple days now. I've discovered that going a day without my computer does not kill me. It makes me very cranky and ticks off the people around me, but it doesn't kill me. It's nice to know that I could survive if I was stranded on a deserted island without internet. Well, I could survive for 2 days anyway. Bear Grylls shows you how to survive by drinking your own urine so you don't get dehydrated, but I have yet to see a show that demonstrates how to survive without a connection to the cyber world.

I had a blast in MN with my girlfriends. What a fun time! We spent a lot of time shopping at the Mall of America. Do you think all the walking I did will offset the amount of food I ate? Yeah, I highly doubt it too. Why is it that you eat twice as much on vacation as you ordinarily would at home?

And so far, so good - 2 out of my 3 flights were delayed, but for less than an hour each. And I haven't had to sit next to Tuberculosis Joe, or the 500 pounds man who overflows into your seat, or the woman who bathes in cologne! In fact, I sat next to a nice guy named Matt on the way to Minneapolis and he didn't mind that I talked his head off. Although, come to think of it, he did put his earphones on 5 minutes after we took off....

Now I'm in New York and ready to meet with the folks at Guideposts tomorrow. For now, I need sleep. I think I got maybe 8 hours of sleep the last 3 nights combined! We were having too much fun to sleep.

Me and my loopy friends in MN. This picture was taken after I peed my pants and had to change. OK, I didn't really, but dork that I am, I did sit in a big puddle of water which made it look like I had bladder control issues. I knew there was a reason I packed twice as many outfits as I needed.

  1. Uh Oh, Poor Matt had to end up sitting next to Talks Wayy too much Tilly!! You know on Family Feud the other day (and I've only ever seen this episode, so I feel compelled to tell you), that the number one answer for annoying things people do on planes was talk too much?? Yep, No tuburculosis joe, no 500 pound seat overflowers, just plain and simple talk too much :)

Ok, now you know we your fans would just love to hear you talk, I just had to share the fact that the only episode of Family Feud I've ever seen happened to have this very subject :)

  2. I'm a Girl Scout, so I'm always prepared. Twice as many clothes as you think you need just makes good sense.

  3. Generally the kind of guy that drinks his own urine is not well familiar with the working of the internet. It's rare that you find of person who is skilled at both. And, just in case you're wondering, I'm not one of those rare types.

  4. You eat twice as much because food tastes better when you don't have to plan it, shop for it, cook it, listen to people whine about how there are minute specks of green stuff that have to be picked out, put the leftovers away, and wash the dishes.

At least that is why I eat more when I am on vacation.

  6. No way, 1st commenter? Woohoo!! You must be up as last as I am!

Very proud of you for surviving no Internet for two days. I once survived no checking my e-mail on my phone for two exists. But they were those longs exits. Not the kind we all come to expect every mile marker. No sirie bob (sp?). At LEAST a mile and a quarter between exits.

    I KNOW!!

  7. Hey Dawn, don't you know that any food eaten in the presence of good friends never adds to your weight? And yes, that also counts for chocolate! (I assure you, this is totally true!)

On another note: thank you very much for posting my comment about the school in Dakar on your Sunday Sound Out some time ago. The web page had about 800 hits in a couple of days and a few people e-mailed to offer their help - wonderful!

  8. Awww glad to see you're all having fun!

Now, don't party TOO hard, you crazy gals. I know that might be hard, though, but I have faith in you! ;) Haha

  9. I too get very cranky at work if I'm without internet or computer. Luckily it's never down for too long. If it happens at home- I usually sleep :P

  10. With all of these trips lately how does you husband handle being at home with the kids? Does he have a job that allows him to be home during the day for the little ones or do you have to make other arrangements?

  11. I don't really have anything to say, but it said 0 comments, so I thought I would give it a shot. Thanks for your insight and humor. You make life seem manageable. I am the mom of 4 girls, and I always wanted 6. You give me a look into that life. Enjoy NY- someday I hope to be published as well!

  14. So glad you had a good time!! I can't imagine NO internet!! :) But I bet you have a lot of blogging material back-logged now!

  15. Hi Dawn! It's great that you're getting some time with your girlfriends on so you can unwind after all that writing! New York should be a blast too - have a great time there (while, of course, having serious meetings with your publisher). Make sure to do a taste comparison between Chicago food and New York food.

By the way, there is a show on how to survive without the internet. It's called "reading a book." Okay, it's not really a show.

But it's something I can't wait to do when your book comes out. I have a feeling that once I start reading it, I won't CARE if the internet is down or not.

  16. I was surfing around other mommy blogs and stumbled into yours.

Our family just watched the Man vs. Wild in which Bear pees on his shirt so as to wrap this around his head to keep his brain cool. All I could think was: Oh, great this guy is giving my boys ideas! So needless to say when you mentioned that you pee'd in your pants I immediately had a picture of someone wrapping pants around their head!!HAHAHA!
What a great blog! Have a fabulous time in MN.

  17. Wow! The lady second from the right in the picture looks like my old friend Jen!
Did you know that the King of Prussia mall near Philly actually has more retail square footage than the mall of americas. That means that can you eat more while you're there ;)

  18. Totally unrelated to your post (except that I had Internet outages this weekend too), but I wanted to tell you that I visited Chicago and LOVED it! I was in town for business, and thought of you when my driver said he brought Mariah Carey in from the airport for her Oprah show ;)

  19. "I sat next to a nice guy named Matt on the way to Minneapolis"

There's a possibility that was my boss - if your row-mate was good looking (always reminded me a little of Andy Garcia) with brown hair, early-mid 40's?

In any case, it sounds like you had a wonderful trip :)

  20. After looking at all of your fun pics the past few weeks I now know where Brooklyn gets her fun smile.
    She looks just like you.

  23. I was just at the Mall of America, too. Did you check out Archiver's? It's a dream store for crafters like me. If only there was one in the Bay Area.

  25. Ahhh, I can't believe you were at MOA this weekend with your girlfriends. I was there too with my BFF! My feet are still sore. That place was huge. And boy did we shop. My suitcase weighed twice as much as it did when I left home. Did you see any of the Elvis impersonators? Or the group of ladies who all had the same shirts on? The shirts had the locations of all their trips together! Hope that wasn't you. Glad you had fun. I know we did. I'll have the bills to prove it by the end of the month!
