Guess What!

I awoke this morning to the sound something crashing. I jumped out of bed and as I headed toward the family room, I could hear my middle son laughing hysterically.

"What are you doing in here? What did you throw?" I demanded.

"Baby," came his one word answer.

"Baby?" I rubbed my eyes and tried to clear my head. The baby did it? He threw the baby? Wait - the baby's still sleeping. What is he saying? I think to myself that I really should take time to brew a pot of coffee before continuing with this line of questioning.

After interrogating him, I learned that he and my oldest son who had just escaped out the door to walk to school with his friends, had been whipping my daughter's baby doll across the house at each other. What a great idea, boys! In their game of catch, actually scratch that. In their game of Let's See if I Can Maim my Brother by Knocking Him Unconscious With a Doll Who Blinks, Drinks and Wets, they managed to knock over a large vase of flowers sitting on the kitchen table. Water was now dripping off the edge of the table and onto the floor. Water was dripping between the leaves in the table and onto the chairs.

Although I'd be ticked if they did this any time, I was especially irate because I don't do mornings. I loathe waking up to screaming, fighting, arguing, and flying dolls.

Fast forward. The oldest four are at school. The youngest two have been fed. I put a movie on for them (because I'm a bad mom that way) and came in my room to do a little writing. Approximately three seconds later, I saw the three year old go skating past my bedroom door on a couple of plastic plates. Why not, right? He cracked one of the plates. My Tupperware supply is dwindling thanks to stunts like this. I had him toss it into the recycling bin while I explained that plates are not skates. There's a Dr. Seussish book for ya! Mom says plates are not skates. Don't put them on your feet. Don't scoot across the street. Don't strap them to your shoes or you'll fall and get a bruise. Plates are not skates.

Anyway, you wanna know why I had a vase of flowers on the table to begin with? Because my husband brought them to me! Know why he gave them to me? Because a publisher made me an offer and I accepted!!! Or well, my agent accepted. Or my agent brought the offer to me and we both said, "Oh yeah!"

I'm so excited to be working with Guideposts in publishing my first AND my second books! The first one will be coming out in the fall of 2008! These folks have some really fun marketing ideas for the book and I can't wait to share them with you guys!
Hooray! It's official now! I'm getting my book published!

Congrats on getting a publisher! I look forward to your book, and I'm recommending it to lots of people.

  16. Congratulations! The book will be awesome - I just know it. Sorry about your flowers! I've been trying to convince my husband for two years (we just celebrated our 2 year anniversary...) that flowers make great gifts. You just proved HIS point - flowers don't last. So...I'm the lucky collector of crystal figurines - crystal doesn't go out with the yard waste!

  17. Congratulation, Dawn! The flower are beautiful. Can't wait to read your book. It will be long 10 months or so, I think it takes less time to carry a baby to term, but I am determined to be patient. Again, congratulations!

  21. Yay!! So glad to hear you've got a publisher!! Wow, I think I hate you a little bit. lol Nevermind, just remembered you have six children...back to "so glad you are you and I'm not" LOL If things get loud enough, maybe Tupperware will hear this and send you a massive supply? Fingers crossed.

  22. WOO_HOO! YIPEE!

Congrats on the real DEAL! I hope you get a chance to go out and celebrate with some champagne or something you really enjoy! (Like peace and quiet?)

I laughed out loud at this one for two reasons.

    1. I remember my brothers HURLING my dolls across the room.

    2. I remember being the one on the PLATES!

Thanks for making me chuckle, as per usual, when I read your posts.

In some strange way it is like watching your best friend "hit it big!" You've been so great at sharing this journey with all of us. :)

I will wait...patiently...for 2008. And HEY - two books? DOUBLE WOW!

    :)

  32. Awww, what a nice hubby to get you flowers...and LOL (sorry for laughing), but that is just so appropo that the kids would break that very vase of flowers so soon after getting them. *tears of laughter* The morning just wouldn't be complete without something like that happening, right?

YAY for you on the book deal(!)...and I'm so excited to hear there will be TWO books! WOO-WHOOOOO! You go, Dawn!

    ReplyDelete
  33. The flowers are gorgeous. I dont believe you are throwing tupperware away? It has a life time guarantee. If you have replaced the vase just a tip in case you didnt know, put a teaspoon of sugar into the water will keep your flowers longer. I have only recently become game enough to keep flowers in my house lol, too scared that a child will knock them over.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Congratulationw! That's so exciting! Sorry about your flowers--they were beautiful! What a sweet husband. And I love the way you turned the baby doll incident into an intro to the book announcement! That's one reason why your book's going to be awesome! Great writing!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Why do people care if they're the first to comment?? Maybe they should set loftier goals for themselves! Like, how about writing a book?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Why are people so anxious to be first in your comments?
why is it such a big deal to them?
I hope your books make it downunder to Australia, I'll be watching out for them. I do love a good laugh from my reading material.

  37. I have never posted a comment before, but I read often. I am a SAHM of 5 and you keep me in stitches.

  55. Congratulations on your book! You have a very entertaining blog and such a great spirit about you. You seem to be able to laugh about so many things (I guess that's better than crying, right? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yeah Dawn. I'm so happy for you! I can't wait for the book to come out. It's already on my Christmas/Birthday/Valentines Day/Mothers Day list.

By the way, if you want cheap "skates" for your son, go to home depot, get four of those peel and stick tiles. Stick two to each other back to back and you have perfect carpet skates. I usually cut them so they're round. And I usually only make one. Then give them a broom, mop, or swiffer and let them push themselves around on it. My five year old has gone through several:) They do start to chip which is why you make them round, and why you throw them away and get new ones. I hate picking tile chunks off the edge of the wall:) That glue REALLY sticks.

  57. Dawn, that is wonderful news. I'm so happy for you. Congratulations many times over. That is really awesome. The flowers are/were beautiful. Margie

Don't throw the Tupperware away. It has a lifetime warranty against chips, cracks, flaking and peeling. As long as it hasn't been melted, they'll usually replace it or give you credit for it!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I am SO happy for you! That is just GREAT news for all of us AND for you!

My boys have used the tupperware type stuff for all kinds of things but never for skates... Hope they don't read your blog and get any new ideas! They come up with plenty on their own!

Thank you for making me laugh this morning. I hate the fact that someone elses misfortune makes me laugh but their are mornings that I am SUPER happy that those kinds of things are happening to you and not to me. - Sorry but it's true!

Kids will be kids you gatta love em. I don't do mornings either, at all. I even have most of mine trained that you are not allowed to come out of your rooms before 8 am cause I need that first cup of coffee to deal with you. This is for weekends and vacations. My 3 year old hasn't learned that yet so on the weekends dad gets him and I get to sleep in!

Take care looking forward to the book!

As for Tupperware-- if it's real Tupperware, they replace it for free if it cracks or breaks. My family usually has it replaced by the lady at our local (Mt. Prospect) farmers' market, but a Google search would probably let you know other options.
    Keep up the good writing!

  71. Congratulations on the publisher! That's awesome! :)

My daughter has found out that plates are not skates as well, or rather, one is not very useful. She didn't do it on purpose, but she went running through the living room (what else is new), stepped on one of her plastic plates from her Dora kitchen & went flying. Only one of her legs though. She did a beautiful split. :P She was not happy for all of two seconds until she realized that plates made her do that & she wanted to try it again. I quickly put those plates away. I don't need any injuries, thank you.

  112. Guidepost...uh, are you sure you aren't mormon?

  113. Yahoo for the book deal! I think that a large part of your appeal to so many readers (besides the fact that you're funny) is that it is so nice to see someone actually being rewarded for having a large family and finding a way to keep a sense of humor about it. I'm expecting our 5th child, and trust me, I know that society in general does not reward mothers with a lot of kids (see eBay post about glares in grocery store). It is so nice to see the hard-working stay-at-home-mom who has her priorities straight finally getting some back pay (other than in hugs and kisses and good grades), and we are all living it through you. good job. you deserve it!

  114. Congratulations! I can't wait till the book comes out!!!!!

  117. Congratulations Dawn! I've been passing out your blog site to the moms at our local library (I do children's programming at our local library)...they're loving it too! Who says you can't get what you wish for?!

  118. Dawn...

WOW! So THAT'S what long-stemmed roses look like!

    He's a KEEPER, Dawn...BONAFIDE!

After 33 years of marriage, if I'm lucky and Valentine's or Mother's Day doesn't fall too close to the date, hubby just might get a few of them "purties" mixed in with the snapdragon/stinkweed arrangement he's planning for the top my casket!

MANY CONGRATS ON THE BOOK DEAL!

And I HOPE that EVIL Bank never sees a PENNY of your "fortune!" Perhaps you could send copies of your Guidepost check(s) and your new bank's deposit slips to EVIL Bank...along with a little note...something like:

    Dear Evil Bank,

In regard to the enclosed, I'd suggest that you don't mess around with Moms like me in the future!

Just because we have to clean up a lot of crap...doesn't mean we have to take yours!"

Dawn...YOU SO DESERVE ALL YOU ARE RECEIVING! SO HAPPY FOR YOU!

    Sincerely

    Nancy Binky

  121. Hooray for you, Dawn!! I am very new to the world of blogs...in fact, yours is the first I have ever read, but I guess since I've been reading for awhile, I've been a "lurker" (another new term for me!!), so thought I would finally comment because I was so happy to read that you got a book deal! I loved hearing that you had been praying for a way to help add to the family income, and your prayers have been answered! I know how great God is, but it is so wonderful to be reminded now and again! I am a happy mommy of 5, and so can relate to SO MANY of your stories, so now can't wait to read your books!!!! Congrats!!

Those roses were beautiful. I bet they smelled good, too. Were you able to rescue them?

  136. Congratulations! Waiting eagerly for the book. Fall... OK, we can handle that...

BTW, I use blogger, too, and when you click "view comments" there's a submission form right at the top next to the first comments. Maybe you could work that in here, too; it would take us lazies one less click and a bunch less scrolling to leave comments.

  137. I've heard of parents taping sponges to their kids feet to clean ( um I mean skate) on the floors.
CONGRATS to you & your family! Can't wait to read your books!

    ReplyDelete
  138. Oh, I love Guideposts. Awesome and congratulations!!!

    ReplyDelete
  139. Congratulations! I'll be on the lookout for your books because I LOVE your blog. I discovered it via a link on a friend's blog a few weeks ago and immediately added it to my "Blogs I Like" list. I've been lurking since then, but I had to comment. My boys are just 2-almost-3 and 1, but already I make that snap decision when I hear a crash: "Should I race in and see if anyone is bleeding (much), or should I just fervently pray that the rapture will come RIGHT NOW?"
Thanks for being such a great source of inspiration and belly laughs to other moms.
