Curious George and I Went out Tonight

I got to meet my agent in person tonight! Yay! She took me out to dinner at a really nice restaurant. Ya gotta love a restaurant that doesn't have a clown wandering around making balloon animals or peanut shells on the floor or ball pits and tunnels.

So I met with an editor at a publishing house near me. Guess what the first thing she said to me was. Give up?

"So, let me see your shoes." LOL! She reads my blog! That just cracked me up! And I didn't even wear the really pointy shoes I'd just gotten. She, on the other hand, had on very pointy shoes, in case you're wondering. The other editor in the meeting was wearing tennis shoes. Ahhhh, comfort!

So, even though I managed to wear nice shoes and nice clothes, I just had to accessorize with a Curious George bandage. Right before my meeting, I sliced off part of my thumb while cutting up an apple for my son. These were the only bandages I could find. Oh well.

Oh! For those of you asking how I made the bacon, I used rolled fondant. I tinted half of it reddish-brown and I left the other half white. I randomly threw down pieces of each color on my table dusted with powdered sugar then I took a rolling pin and rolled all the pieces together nice and thin. After I had a thin sheet of reddish/white fondant mixed together, I cut bacon sized slices. Finally, I thinned out the edges a little bit so they curled up some like bacon does when it starts to cook. Viola!

  1. Okay, since I'm new here I feel like I've just opened the book at Chapter 12. What happened in the first chapters? Editor??

  2. Heh. I thought you used fake veggie bacon! It totally looks like that...but might be a little nasty on cake. :)

  4. Ever since finding your ebay posting I have been following your blog. You alternatively keep me in stitches or tears.

I am glad to see someone take something so mundane as their family life and be able to turn it into something really amazing - and entertaining for thousands of others.

Best of luck - we will be with you all the way....

  6. Rolled fondant is right up there with duct tape in my book. I've got a bunk bed like that too. And, It's always the one that's not doing acrobatics at the moment that winds up in the ER.

  7. Sounds like things are really going well for you. I hope the book is a huge seller ... college tuition for 6 kids, a spankin' new vehicle for you, etc, etc. I know I'll be buying THAT book.

  9. You know Dawn, you could have worn your clogs to the meet.

All you need to 'dress' them up is a coupla markers, a bit of glitter and a bow here or there.

Viola!! Dressy footwear ..... and comfy.

  12. Wow! How creative with the cakes! I always have creative ideas, but no idea how to make them happen. The lady at the bakery loves using her creativity to make my ideas come together, though.
So, how did things go with the editor? I can't wait to see your first book in print!!

  17. Hi Dawn, looks like I am the first today.I know you said you have no time to read books But, Have you ever herd of the Sweet Potato Queens? The author is Jill Connor Brown, She is so funny.. just like you! She wrote a new book called Raising children for fun and profit. Due out in January. I bet it will be another great one! Check out the website www.sweetpotatoqueens.com To get an idea of her style of writing. I know you will get a good laugh. The reason I thought of this is because she talks about Loving Bacon. Kristine in Michigan.

  18. I am laughing so hard because, for a moment, I thought the picture was of your foot after it had been molded into the pointy toed shoes. GROSS! Can you imagine? I always get frustrated when it's time to put "real" shoes on. I walk around the house all day in socks and toss on some slip on shoes to transport the kids here and there. My feet just aren't the same anymore. Love your blog. Thanks for being so real.

  19. Ooooh, meeting with editors! How exciting! Congrats on the progress of the book.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Well, of course she reads your blog. Everyone who is anyone does!

  21. Seriously, I don't know where you find the time. The cake was really cool.

  22. A Curious George bandaid?! That's cutting edge fashion right there. You're so hip.

    ReplyDelete
  23. LOL! I went to work with a SpongeBob bandaid the other day and I was teased all day long!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Dawn, I love the bandaid; it so typical of a day in a large family isn't it?

I can't wait to read your book!

  25. Thanks for that bacon tip. I will have to remember that.

As for the bandage, it's not unusual for me to be sporting a Scooby Doo bandage. I only buy them for my daughter and when you need one, you need one.

    Good luck with your agent.

  26. If your editors really really work hard..they can get your book out in time for Christmas. (THIS Christmas!)

  27. RE: Restaurants

On one of his CD's, comedienne Tim Wilson wrote and sings "CHUCK E CHEESE HELL"...It's HILARIOUS!

    Bandaid...CUTE!

    Shoes...Sensible, I'm sure.

    So...Okay,

Checked my email for book update...nothing there.

WHAT DID THEY SAY ABOUT YOUR BOOK???

    Inquiring minds want to know!

    Sincerely,

    Nancy Binky

  28. I'm a new reader to your blog. Fantastic, by the way! I hope your meeting went well, and you were probably wise for skipping out on the pointy shoes.

The bandage rocks! We love "george" at our house...heck, I'm raising four that strongly resemble him. :)

  29. You are too dang artsy, girl!

And I love the band-aid. Very chic.

  30. LOL! Congrats on being able to go to a "big person's" restaurant without kids :o)
Someone from my hubby's company is taking us out (and a few other guys and their wives) to a nice restaurant next week....hope I remember how to behave at a nice restaurant(HA!) We will have ONE child with us though, but he is only 4 months old so he is pretty easy to take care of :o)

  31. Oh yes fun bandaids- I currently am sporting veggie tales cause I keep sticking my fingers with pins. I have been enjoying your blog and all the fun stuff your kids do! I can't wait until your book is published. Best of luck!!

  32. AMAZING!! I would never be that creative...GOOD JOB!
I'm glad you got to go to a nice restaurant, that is so fun!
I can't wait to hear more about the book!

  34. What do you mean tennis shoes aren't dressy? That's all I own! Boooooo to pointy shoes.

  35. Hi Dawn:

I liked your "Curious George" laughing band aid.

Can you share with us more information on your upcoming book, now that you've talked to your agent?

    Best Regards,

    Omar.-

  36. OK, now you are officially my HERO! I too have 6 kids (10 & under) and I have never in my life made a fondant and rolled it thin! I am lucky to make a carrot cake in a rectangle pan. (I'm eating the extra cream cheese frosting out of the bowl as I type. :))
So, let's see...you make designer cakes, nurture and care for 6 kids, write like a witty super-smarty, and keep us laughing every day??

    Hmmmm...yep, my new hero!

    God Bless!

  37. Your agent sounds nice. I personally think the bandaid is cute. And there is no way I am making bacon that is that much work.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hee Hee I've been known to sport Elmo bandaids from time to time too. (You should try them--red goes so well with everything :D ).

I hope you got a chance to enjoy your dinner out. Hopefully thoughts like, "Did they do their homework yet?" "Did my husband put them in bed yet?" "How big of a mess will I have to clean up when I get home?" did not go through your mind and you were able to relax.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Nice restaurant, eh? You know the very first thing that popped into my head....Lou's. Heh (Okay, I'll admit it, oralgasmic, but not "nice.")

Now, when that thumb heals, you can tear off the bandage, dance around and sing: "I'm...too sexy for George Band-Aids, too sexy for George Band-Aids...."

    ReplyDelete
  40. Well I'd hope she reads your blogs! She'd really be missing out if she wasn't. Besides, she'd have to have read them to know what a comic genius you are and decide to represent you, right? :)

  41. Don't get injured at my house, I have the following bandaids: Princess, Spongebob, Incredibles, Curious George, VeggieTales, Elmo, Dora and I think Cars. Oh and I think some of those boring beige ones.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I have no experience with fondant but I want to try!

  43. ummmmmmm....was looking for some more info on your meeting.

    OK...shoes, band-aid, etc.....
    WHAT was the CONVERSATION?
ANY new news on the book?

    Dish, my friend, DISH!!!!!

  44. Dawn, you crack me up! How did she like the shoes???? My mom designs and bakes wedding cakes and it always working with fondent - not the tastiest baking goody, but it always looks awesome. Love the bacon!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Viola?
    Don't you mean Voila?

    ReplyDelete
  46. I thought you used Fruit by the Foot for the bacon...I stand corrected :)

PS _ Love the fuzzy crocs - you must indulge yourself for the winter!

    ReplyDelete
  47. No, I mean Viola! I was talking about small stringed instruments, duh.
Sheesh! I made a typo. Sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  48. WOW how exciting to meet your publisher. I dont know why you would be surprised that they read your blog? I dont let a day go by without checking your blog!
    Hope your finger is ok
I have a tendency to do that also, Im starting to finally learn though that it really hurts and I should move my fingers out of the way. I think maybe I have been watching too much Jamie Oliver lol

    ReplyDelete
  49. Love love your sense of humor. No matter how bad my day is I always read your blog and pretty soon my mouth starts curling, a smile appears and then I am laughing! Thanks to you. I so agree with you about kids and husband bothering us when we have five minutes to write a blog or whatever. Do they have a radar? I also love the birthday cakes you made. How did you make all the characters on the Simpsons cake? Fondant? Creating whimsical cakes could be a second income to your already talented life. Although I don't know how you would find the time, but sure you could if you wanted to. Keep writing.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I knew what you meant Dawn ;) I thought it was a very cute typo....

Back to bandaids for a bit I was known to wear "Snoopy" ones when my kids were little. .......and do you know I needed a bandaid last night and couldn't find one, heck I couldn't even find the icecream container that holds them and other "medical emrgency kit" stuff......AND ALL MY KIDS HAVE GROWN UP AND LEFT HOME ....hope I didn't put it in the freezer by mistake...maybe I'd better go check...and go buy some Snoopy bandaids am sure I can think of an excuse as to why I am wearing them ( the supermarket was out of boring beige? )

  51. Having lived through the Band-Aids as accessories phase (you know, where every freckle and imaginary scratch must be shielded by an X-marks-the-spot structure of at least two bandages but preferably many more), I find myself with a pile of leftover Toy Story, Clifford, Dora and Veggie Tales bandages that the kids wouldn't touch if their lives depended on it. Thus, if I'm not paying attention, I'm out in public with cartoons on the spot where I scraped my leg shaving or cut my finger trying to peel a carrot that nobody wants to eat anyway. Funny how you can pinpoint the age of a household's children by analyzing the cartoon characters on their bandages, bedding, Dixie cups and underwear. It's way more accurate than carbon dating.

  52. I was NOT curious (George) about how you made the bacon-like icing on the cake. But, if I should EVER feel the need to add butchered looking items to my desserts (pork, beef or poultry) you will be the first one I call.

  53. I quit buying the cute character band-aids because within about 24 hours of purchase, everyone had so many owies that their bodies would be covered with the cute band-aids and the box(es) were empty. No band-aids were left for real owies!!!

  54. Dawn, I was looking through a catalog and saw a BACON WALLET and thought of your son! It is located at catalogfavorites.com and is item number V69-446. Thought it might may a great present! Kris

  55. Were your editors playing "Good Cop, Bad Cop" via their shoes? Just wondering... Oh, and my daughter just went by and saw the pic of your Curious George band aid. Now she wants them too. Darn you Dawn... Darrrrrn Yoooooooou! :)

  56. LOL, Dawn, as always! Love the special touch of a character band-aid with dress clothes. And I'm so glad you wore more sensible shoes so you could enjoy the good food, the adult conversation and talking business with the editor! YAY!! Can't wait for the book to come out!! God Bless You, Dawn...every time I read your blogs, I always feel like you validate motherhood, and all the things we moms do that go un-noticed.

  57. Congrats on your meeting with your agent and editor. That's great.

My personal favorite: Hello Kitty Band-aids. That is usually the only ones I can find and they don't have much stick. I hate that.

  58. Yay for you for a nice, successful dinner out! I have yet to meet my agent, and it drives me crazy not knowing her face-to-face! Is yours local? And what publisher!!! You did not tell us all the good scoop!

I missed the part about shoes, but I don't wear pointy ones either. I just don't get it... why bother? Does the pointiness make us look thinner, and aren't they using more material to make the pointy parts? It's all just a mystery to me, plus, they don't really sell pointy shoes over at Payless!

Still waiting for your visit to http://www.manicmommy.blogspot.com so I can get you featured in the November Minute With Manic program--it would be a hoot! You should see the one from yesterday on Brad Pitt!

  60. Dear Ms. Burnett,

We watched your special this evening on American Masters. My family and I have always ejoyed your show, but do not understand your need to pretend to be a normal, everyday housewife named "Dawn". Is it because you miss Tim and Harvey and Lyle and Vicki? The bandage however, was a cute touch.

    We are worried about you.

  61. Yeah! I'm not the only "retarded" one who cuts their thumb while slicing apples!!!!!! I was able to slice my thumb enough to have to go to Urgent Care! To top that I was slicing the apples in my Kindergartener's class during a party last Friday, and IT HAPPENED when I looked up to see where my 2yr was. I know I know better and I got yelled by lots of people. Next time I think I will just let the 2 yr run wild..

  62. I was also wondering how one would go about accessing the posts that get bumped off the main page.

I put your blog on RSS (when you still had that option, before you changed your interface.)
Now you don't have the RSS button, not the "older posts" link and not the archives.
I can see the last 25 posts in my bookmarks in the RSS, but there is no other way to see older posts.

  63. I do theatre to escape my children (and yes, I usually wind up playing someone's mom). Last summer, I did a show that involved a bacon theme (it's called "Fuddy Meers", look it up on wikipedia) and I sent your cake to everyone in the cast. I wasn't going to post that, until you mentioned the band aid thing. Our cast gifts were tins of bacon shaped band aids. No, I haven't used them yet. I think people would look at me wierder with a bacon band aid than with a Backyardagins band aid.

  65. Just so you know I buy softball bandaids because I love them. My husband is not a fan though. He thinks I am nuts. Well I figure with half the kids you have if I want to look stupid wearing softball bandaids, then I can. So just keep wearing curious george. He's cool....

  66. I'm another one who found you via the ebay thing and read you every day for a good laugh. You are my hero! (But "Viola"? I believe it's "Voila!" which means, in French, "There it is!" and is pronounced "Walla!" And there's your culture lesson for the day!)

  67. We try not to cut ourselves in this house since there's rarely a band-aid to be found! ;-) Good luck with the book, I know I'll be reading!
